What does each of the numbers mean when referring to a particular layout?

I know i have a 4x3 on my Virtual Energy but I am wondering what exactly does this mean?

let me try this one.. the pros can correct me and fill in where i left out.

first digit is the distance in inches of the pin to your PAP

2nd digit is the distance in inches of the mass bias or CG (depending if its a asym or sym core) to your PAP

3rd digit is the pin buffer distance which im still trying to figure out. hope someone can fill me in on this as well.

do take note that there is another layout method called the dual angle method.

z1=Pin to pap
z2= mb to pap
z3= Pin buffer

what is a pin buffer, and can someone explain the other method of laying a ball out...the dual angle layout that was mentioned above?

Pin buffer its the horizontal distance between pin an Pal(perpendicular axis lane)
Also Buffer Determines the â€˜Angularityâ€™ of the ball motion (smaller distances increase backed reaction)

Larger pin buffers put the pin closer to the midline promoting earlier, smoother reaction. Smaller pin buffers bring the pin higher above the midline giving more length and angularity.

so that means the pin up or down position is determined by the pin buffer distance?

Am i correct to say that the process is to determine the layout, say for example a 4 by 4, and then if i want more length, i have a larger pin buffer to have the pin above the fingers?

and i can have a pin down 4 by 4 from using a larger pin buffer?

You basically got it, but you said larger pin buffer twice...your first example would've been a smaller pin buffer. Before dual angle layouts and pin buffers this measurement used to be the distance above midline.

A lot of drillers still use the third number to be pin height above the midline. Personally, I think that's easier to lay out than using pin buffer, and both do the same thing just in a different manner. -- JohnP
