X hole and reaction
« on: April 20, 2007, 04:25:14 PM »
Is there a site that would give me a good understanding of X hole locations and effect on ball reaction?

Two answers.

1. NO.

2. Maybe this one...but you'll probably end up confused!

Here it is:

a weightole on your positive axis point will cause the ball to roll up sooner

a weighthole between your positive axis point and your grip will remove top and side weights allowing the ball to react smoother and will flare less

a weighthole past your positive axis point will increase backend reaction and length caused by more flare

Just as you could pitch a thumbhole, so could the weighthole be pitched.

Pitching the weighthole away from the palm preserved more top weight in the ball thus enhancing the backend and the hit of the ball.

Pitching the hole towards the palm caused the ball to lose more topweight and thus making a smoother reaction.

Pitching towards the thumb will cause more length and a sharper backend reaction. Pitching towards the fingers will have an opposite effect.

The current way of thinking if you are strictly worried about getting the ball back within the legal ABC limits is to place the weighthole at the intersection of a line drawn from the grip center, through the CG to the vertical axis line. A hole placed here will stand a 95% chance of getting the ball back within the limits.

thank you for the replies.  Can you place an X hole to remove finger/thumb weight, will placing the hole on your Vertical axis line below your axis point remove thumb weight from the ball?  How about above it?

Yes, a hole below the pap will remove thumb weight. Above the pap will remove SOME finger weight. Past the val, near the pap will remove some side and bottom weight. Think of your pap as a center point. Above it is fingers, below is thumb, past is bottom, between gc and pap is top.

Depends on where your PAP is located.  If it has, for example, a +1 1/2" vertical component and you drill a hole 1" below it, finger weight will be removed.  The dividing line is the grip midline, the line perpendicular to the centerline and through the grip center.  A hole on the VAL below the midline will remove positive side weight and thumb weight.  The more the hole is below the midline, the higher the percentage of thumb weight compared to side weight.  Similarly, a hole on the VAL above the midline will remove positive side weight and finger weight.  A hole on the VAL will also remove some top weight.  --  JohnP
