This is definitely an overdue review...
Dynothane was nice enough to send myself a Pure Energy to test out:
Original Ball Specs: 3.25†pin / 3.5 oz of top weight
Drilling: 5-1/4†pin x 4-3/4†CG with pin 3-3/4 above midline with a 19/32" extra hole drilled 2" deep on my axis midline. Ending weights were 1 oz top weight, 1/2 oz side weight and 1/16 finger weight
Style: High rev player with a 12.5†track circumference and a high track (5-1/2†x 1-3/8â€)
Initial Test Conditions (ball in box condition):
Med / Heavy…Fresh house shot on synthetic heads and wood backends that were resurfaced two months ago. & Med oil on second shift shot…same lanes (Oil to ~34' / buff to ~40).
Multiple angles of attack where possible depending on speed, hand position and finger lift…Typically start around 4th arrow out to 10 and move left as the heads start to go away. Have had success playing as deep as around 28/29 at the arrows. On a slightly higher volume of oil I was able to play closer to 3rd arrow and actually had to move right and tighten up the line slightly when carry down occurred. I really would like to try polish on this ball, but the reaction as is just so predictable that I don't want to mess with it.
Great color combinations / logo color match on this one. After testing the Sniper I have really found a new love in particle equipment (on the right shot) and this ball continues this love affair. In some respects this ball reminds me the Things Lives in what it can accomplish deeper in the oil as compared to my other equipment...a great midlane read, aggressive turn and versatility. The ball plays about 4-5 boards stronger than the sniper and when the lanes are correct I've had great success with the two as a 1-2 punch. With the amount of flare this ball gets it's not as susceptible to carry down as the sniper was.
Overall Feelings: The Pure Energy is Dynothane’s latest release for Medium Heavy / Heavy oil conditions. With the addition of particles to their already wildly successful Soaker cover stock they have created a ball that will allow bowlers to effectively read the mid-lanes on heavier patterns or low friction synthetic lanes, while the flare from the original Energy’s core will create devastating power at the pins and the enough power to cut through carry down. When combined with their previous High Energy and Vendetta Sniper releases a bowler would have a very formidable array of tools to attack heavier oil conditions.
Follow-Up: Since my initial review findings I have had good success at tournaments with this ball. On full synthetic lanes with heavier oil patterns this ball has really shined for me. In the past I would be forced to move right and have less area to work with. The Pure Energy allows me to move back into the lane a little bit and still have a ball that is strong enough to make the turn in the soup so to speak. Just a wonderful ball by Dynothane!!
