Help me pick/drill a ball`
« on: December 29, 2003, 02:16:09 PM »
New to this board, and bowling pretty much. A little background: I bowled as a teenager about 16 years ago. Bought a D/T Cure last year and joined a league. Average about 170, I think mainly due to my inconsistency in releases (sometimes I come around the side of the ball instead of coming off the back. I was told coming off the side was bad, but I think it may have more to do with ball and drilling? Help me out here, guys. Isn't that why people have different axis of rotation?)and not hitting my mark. Also, my Cure is drilled for drier conditions,(the driller here used the term "skatey"), and we usually had a little too much oil for the ball to move the way I'd like. I threw a pretty basic shot (I'm RH), most of the time a down-and-in shot over the 10-11 board, or vary a little by throwing over the third arrow and swinging it out a bit before coming back into the pocket. I wouldn't mind trying the swinging shot over the 15-20 and out to the 5-8.
My revs are on the low side, and the oil track runs left of my fingers and thumb holes. The pin on my Cure is probably about an inch right and a few inches above my right finger hole. I'm throwing a 15lb ball.
I'm currently stationed in Bahrain where there are only a few houses. Synthetic lanes and a lot of oil; to 36-40 ft. I think they double buff the back end, but they're always using different patterns. I need a ball that will work/react well in heavy oil. I have a plastic ball for spares and will keep the Cure for drier conditions.
I was looking at getting a Storm Fear Factor when I came across the Anomaly, which sounds like something I want to try. Couple questions (since you guys obviously have way more knowledge than I): Would you recommend the Anomaly (or what would you suggest), what pin placement and top weight should I shoot for, and drill pattern.
Flame away! Like I said, I'm new here. Break me in gently!

And where might I be able to buy an Anomaly online? Haven't seen them yet. There is a friend of mine here who will be opening a proshop in a couple weeks. He can probably get this ball for me, but the prices may be really high over here. They're paying over $200 for SST 6 shoes.

Greatings Spanky and welcome to this board, and thank you for your service to this country.

A great site for buying all of your bowling equipment is

http://shop.buddiesproshop.com/

The guys from Buddies posts reviews here and have good reputations for doing business.

It sounds like the lanes over there are pretty tricky, you might want to drill it strong with a leverage drilling to combat the carry down.

Best of luck to you, I hope you get transfered back soon.

Spanky,

I agree with CoachJim.  If you don't know what a "leverage" drilling is, I'll see if I can help you.

You need to know where you're positive axis point is.  If you don't know where this is, then do this:  Best if you use a spare/non flaring ball.  Put a piece of white tape (1"X1")out to the right of your grip, say 5" over and 1" up from the center of your span.  Throw the ball/strike release.  Keep moving the tape until it is stationary as the ball rolls down the lane.  You can use your Cure to do this, but you may need to get somebody to help you.  The procedure is the same, except you position the tape so that it is stationary when the ball leaves your hand.  The ball may start to flare around the arrows, so the tape will start to wobble here.  That is okay.  Keep throwing the ball until the tape doesn't move at release.  This is your Positve Axis Point.  Get your driller to record this point for future, you will need it.

"Leverage" drilling will look different from person to person.  This layout puts the weight block at it's most dynamic imbalance, causing the most flare, and usually the most hook.  Now that you know your axis point, you want to mark the spot on the new ball where the pin and the CG are 3 3/8" from your PAP, going backwards from the PAP to find the center of your span, after drilling your grip, you may need an extra hole to get the ball back to legal.  That is good, an extra hole makes the ball roll earlier.  Put the hole close to/on your axis point.

After re-reading this post and changing it some, it still may be confusing.  Feel free to email me/message me if you have any questions.

Hope this helps ya....
