Not Happy With- The Thing Returns, need help!
« on: February 29, 2004, 12:02:30 PM »
I just bought a Dyno-Thane, The thing returns and need some serious help. The ball is 16 lbs. 3.12 oz top weight, 2-2.5 pin, finger tip and is drilled with dyno-thanes layout #2 Iam a 200 average medium speed, medium revs Bowler The problem is that this ball does not hook! and does not add up the the hype on this ball. The cover is box stock and hooks way less that my Track Phenom unleashed (thought it would) but it hooks a lot less than my Track dry heat and a Storm Hot Wire (All polished)on the same lanes! If you read what Dyno-thane says about this ball It should be my #2 hooking ball, IMO. The ball does have excellent hit and explodes the pins but it is like straight bowling. I play on house shots and night leagues. Any help would be great!

Scuff the surface down to 800 grit. That will make the ball turn earlier. If you cannot have it done by a pro-shop, I suggest you get 800 wet'n'dry or a green scotch-brite pad and do it yourself. Scuff the whole ball lightly in circular motions.

Unfortunately "house shots and night leagues" is not very precise. It should be used on medium-light oil patterns and like the Dry Heat and the polished Hot Wire, it needs to hit some dry before it will hook; since it is a pearl, it will skid on oil. The Phenom Unleashed is meant for much heavier oil than all these other balls. In oil handling ability, the TR will fit between the Hot Wire, a solid agressive resin cover, and the Dry Heat, a solid resin/particle, intended for medium-light oil, just like the Thing Returns. (No matter what it's name is, the Dry Heat is not a good ball for dry lanes, unless you have high speed.)

One thing's for sure, this is not a big flip ball, on medium oil. It does move on the back though once it hits dry. I've been playing up the boards pretty much on a med length and volume on wood lanes. Once you find the line to the pocket with this ball, it carries beautifully and breaks up ugly leaves with the best of 'em. I expect to post some big scores with this ball. My advice would be, if you want to throw this ball, move until you find the line and let this ball work. I wet sanded to 1200 and this ball has a very smooth but strong move on the back.

I have one Thing Returns, pin over the ring finger about 5" from my PAP with the CG in my center grip (5-1/2" from my PAP).  ANd the ball is VERY angular.  I can only use it when the lanes have extreme carry down.   When nothing else makes the turn, this ball does.  It's the most condition specific ball I have, even moreso than my Anomalies.  I have to have long oil to use it.

Of course it needs some dry... all balls do... but because the pin is so far from my PAP it stores energy very well and it just releases all of it at once in the backend.

I don't suggest sanding it down.  That will make the ball jsut like a normal Thing.

Are you certain about the layout?  I mean, are you sure th epin is 4-1/4" from your PAP?  I talk to people and they just say the pin is close to where the finger holes are in the picture.  But it's just for illustration only.  What matters most is the distance from the pin to the PAP.

That's surprising Tony, because that's almost identical to the setup I have on mine. Don't get me wrong, it moves, but it's no hook monster. It has a very smooth and controllable hook.

First, set up 2 is, in my humble opinion, a poor set-up for this ball for most bowlers.  For most people, it means the ball is trying to roll early and flare early, wasting its energy on the oil rather than waiting til its hits the dry and flips.  I think that this just has the ball fighting its own tendencies.  Thus, it could be that the ball is unnecessarily expending energy in the front part of the lane and getting into a heavy end over end roll at the back-end (indeed, I would bet on it, I have seen people drill up the Vendetta the same way and complain it doesn't hook).  When you combine this tendency with the fact that bowling on a late league you are likely to see carrydown...well, I think the ball set up is wrong.

For me, this ball is actually similar to the Element in the amount of head and midlane oil it will handle.  It is not particularly good on carrydown -- it is a pearl after all -- though it is the best of my pearls, but even then it works best when drilled to "go long and flip late".  This saves up energy and allows it to go through carrydown more easily than it might otherwise.  Frankly, this ball is better on fresh oil with fresh backends, but if you are going to use it late, I wouldn't set it up the way you have.

I had to come back and update. I bowled my second set with my T/R last night. It is tracking in a bit I believe as it really moved quite a bit more than it did the first night. Mine has the pin a bout an inch to 1 1/2 over the ring finger at 2 o'clock with the cg kicked back toward the grip center. It's still a very predictable move for me though.

Keep using the ball.  For some reason (I bet Big Phil don't even know why) the Soaker coverstock almost needs a break-in period.

Almost all of mine seemed to go longer when it was brand new.  And then they got a tad stronger.  And then I had to polish them to control the backend.  Then they seem to show their true colors.

Remember, it IS a go-long ball by design.  You might find it performs differently when starting the ball right of where your other equipment would be.  I'm convinced this ball is a beast in the backends, so if you play the oil and get it into the dry later, it'll be more angular.

As a last resort, you can a little resin polish to make it tackier (not some of that 'go longer' stuff), that might help.

I agree with Bamaster....I've had my Thing Returns now for about a month and the first night I had it drilled I bowled a few frames with it at my ball drillers place. I wasn't impressed with the hook so I had him add a weight hole to help. That helped a little, but still was slightly disappointed. The next night on league, it worked just ok, ended up about 30 pins below average...seemed to suffer from some carrydown but stuck with it to get used to it. Fast forward 3 weeks....I've bowled 3 more league nights with it plus some weekday and weekend practice sessions. Ball has gotten ALOT stronger. I don't have the length I'd like with it anymore so I may try to polish it. BUT besides the length issue, it works awesome! I'm not a super bowler but I'm happy with +32, +5, +40 over average the last 3 weeks. I don't hit my mark all the time, but when this ball hits the pocket, carry is phenomenal! I've had longer strings of strikes now than I did all year. I'm more than happy with my first Dyno-Thane purchase..
But to get back to the original topic....give this ball a little time. Let it get tracked up and broken in. If you bowl like 20+ games on it and still don't like it, then mess with the surface. But patience will reward you....

I'm only going to write this once more: all the balls with the Soaker coverstocks are better after 20-30 games than before.  Unlike most equipment, which is best in out of box condition, the Soakers all need time and seasoning.  That includes the Anomaly, Element, Thing Returns and the Thing.  OK.  Everybody got it?!  The TR is marginally better out of the box than the others and it needs a drill that accentuates its nature (from 4x4.5 to label leverage) to be at its best, but it still needs time to really shine.

onformula1, let the ball have time.  As I noted earlier, the drill you put on the ball probably isn't allowing it to show its best, even given the caveats above.  Practice with it, let it get worn in.

Phillip,....you can lead a horse to water,....most bowlers don't seem to understand, and want INSTANT feedback,...several of my D/T balls have made several trips to the practice range before they actually earned their wings.
My Thing Returns was almost set back a few grades,..until one day,..on the right condition it started getting straight A's.....the SOAKER is different, and takes a little time to get adjusted,..jim

First off thanks for all the help the above people have provided! You guy/gals are great!

I wet sanded the ball with 1000 grit wet and dry then cleaned the ball with clean and dull, WOW! what a difference this ball is so much better! very smooth with a very nice hook right at the end! I am very, very happy with this ball and it has a great hit too. IMHO this ball should come from the factory with this set-up and now fits nicely between my Phenom unleashed and my Dry Heat. I posted easy 200+ scores all night (4-games) with very little effort and messing around. (Moving up and down the boards, & different targets)

THANX FOLKS!!!

Go Dyno-thane!
