Please compare High Energy to The Thing
« on: February 06, 2006, 12:42:13 PM »
I loved The Thing, so how does the High Energy compare since they are both solid/pearl combo reactives?

The Thing: like listening to Journey, Styx, Fleetwood Mac

High Energy:  jammin' with  Metallica, AC/DC. Black Sabbath...

I am only guessing that he means the High Energy is like The Thing on steroids.

Thing is longer by core number, cover is weaker then the HE

HE earlier and more backend than the Thing, it has the soaker ATC cover, stronger than the Thing.

In a nut shell, the HE is a stronger ball, excellent choice,

H/E was early and rolled out for me even after surface changes just wasnt a good match for me like I had hoped, the hit was good but it had alot of deflection from roll out I suspect. The thing was a touch longer but more continuous on the back and more violent through the rack. Personaly I liked the thing better and it was more versatile for me although I dont know why.

Here's my thoughts on comparisons,..KEY word here is MY.

Comparisons (COMP) contain too many variables. What I can do with a ball and what you can do with a ball are different,..Every ballis different, every lane is different,...yada-yada-yada-

For example, I used a CM this weekend and won a tournament,...BUT in doing so I went againt all common logic,..there was major over under,..and the middles were flooded and the track was bone dry. Most bowlers were trying to move right with shiny balls and chase the oil line,...I took a very early rolling CM 3 1/2 x 4 1/2, scoth brited the heck out of it,..moved into about 22 and actually made the ball roll out at the pocket by hitting the dry with a very, very dull ball,..the ball would hit the dry and straighten out...so how do I compare this ball,..do I tell you I have a CM that goes straight and rolls out,..I'm sure Phil and Billy would love for me to say that.
I can drill a Thing to hook off the lane, and a High Energy to go straight,..depends on what I want the ball to do, and for the look on the lane I want. What I key to is the SHELL and the WEIGHT BLOCKs,...and their workability,..pearls and solids,...soakers and non,...and weight block designs ie, skid/flip and roll.  MATCHUP is the name of todays game,..and that takes a bunch of smarts. I work with the best minds in the game when it comes to adjusting a ball,..I have Phil/Billy and Del Ballard on speed dial,..I know that the average bowler does not have this luxury,..but you need to know what YOU want a ball to do,..and then search out that knowledge..I can tell you what works for me,..what I've tried,..and what hasn't worked. But everone is different,..the variables are infinite,..so when you or anyone asks for a COMP,..I can't help ya,..but if you PM me and tell me what you're looking for, I can lead you in the direction I would go,..and if I don't have the answer,..I can get it. jim

Now generally speaking,..the Things I use are drilled for smooth arcing, balls that I want to try and control the pocket,..the High Energys I use are for when I can boom the ball around the corner, when I have big backends, and almost unlimited room right,..I like my High Energys shined to store energy,..and my Things are usually about 600-800 semi-dull to increase the roll,..but hey that's just me...jim

Jim is pretty intellegent on setting up equipment. He has helped me in the past when trying to get a certain look on the lanes. Dont hesitate to ask because he is a wealth of knowledge and would hate for it to go to waste. also he had no help in setting up the HE for me lol that was my own doing and the first time I ever drilled a ball off of the recomended drilling sheet (should of known better).

Sorry, that was all I needed or wanted.

Jim, Tech Support, tekneek,

I had no idea you guys thought I was such a dumbass. I guess I need to post here more often.

I've had a Thing and Element in 16 lb, for a very brief period before I switched back to 15 lbs; so I have a decent idea about them. I've had an AU79 for a long time now. I probably drilled it inappropriately for me and had bene playing with surfaces on it. I just drilled an HE but haven't used it yet.

I had an idea of their basic differences, but when I saw, you, Jim, answering the original poster's question in terms that had no meaning for me, I only thought I'd ask for clarification, since I had not been using DT balls very much in the last year or two.

SBAL: 5x4, pin over the fingers,...hole on PAP...about a 3 1/2" pin works well for this.

um I dont remember the exact layout per say but the He from what I remembered was off the drill sheet with pin even with fingers and 4-1/4 away from pap and cg on val and a weight hole. Sorry for being so vaque but that was many moons ago when i drilled that suck and sold it to vollyman. Now the thing was drilled 5-1/2 pin above fingers and cg kicked twoard val with weight hole. I know it had to do with the drilling but it was alot earler than I had thought it would be.

Charlest I dont think your an idiot or dumb, in fact your one of the more knowledgeable folks on here so cheer up and get healed up already lol.

I hurt thinking about him typing with one hand, I had to do the same when I had my rotator cuff repaired, yet I was typing with my left and I can't do anything with my leftside.
