How many people r usin the TJ trick layout on their TNVs??
« on: February 06, 2007, 08:06:27 PM »
I typically dont like ebonite equipment, but seeing as how they now own about half of the bowling world, im considering giving them a shot, especially considering i have a hammer doom that i LOVE.  I know ebonite makes hammer, but to me the hammer stuff DOES still roll differently.

Im looking at getting a TNV drilled with the TJ trick layout to give me good length without a ton of overreaction off the dry.

My main question is, how many people have the layout, or something very similar, how does it react, & what are your stats?

I asked my proshop guy what he thought about drilling the TJ layout on one of my balls...

His answer was:  Do you play like TJ??

And the answer to that is, no I don't..  I'm not even close to the revs that TJ got..

So no TJ layout for me...

Well, over the past few months(i quit bowling for over 6 years, so getting my game back has taken some time) ive gained a bit of revs back.  I have average/above average speed(17-18mph) & medium high revs(350-400ish).  My problem is that i have a HIGH track, & about 45º of axis tilt.  In 1 center i bowl at the lanes go from 1 extreme to the next every other week or so.  1 week it will be pure flood with carrydown, the next week it will be medium/light oil with flying back ends.  1 week it was so bad it was like a reverse lane(no, not a reverse block, reverse LANE), the heads were fried, the midlane was fairly slick, & there was so much carrydown that nothing moved if u got it thru the heads.

Now, im not saying the TNV drilled this way will work on such a strange shot, but i think on the days where the midlane is a little dry, & the backends r fairly fresh, this layout will help me.

From all of my conversations with different people about trick drillings a bowling needs to have a high rev rate and at least 30 degrees of axis rotation.  From what I've been told if the bowler doesn't have enough tilt, etc. the ball will not perform as intended and "puke" on the backend compared to the expected reaction.

I'm using the TJ trick layout on my TNV.

This ball and layout allow me to put all my hand into the ball without worrying about early hook.  It stores the energy and delivers a very strong, continuous arc on the backend.

It's perfect for my game, because I have the ball speed and rev rate to match up with it.

a friend of mine who works for ebonite has a trick layout in his total nv and he put one in my total nv too. i am not a high-rev player by any means, so i was kind of surprised when he did this. he stated as long as he keeps the mass bias in just a little stronger place other than what is on the layout sheet, that it will not go too far down lane before it makes its turn off the breakpoint. he was right. the ball gets down and makes a good turn, but doesn't over snap. i only have a couple of games on it so far, but i have thrown it on synthetics and on guardian and it rolled really nice on both types of lanes.

nothing trick there, just long pins with the pin up high to, like was stated maximize finger weight, you can do that with a standard length pin ball

and like was stated you better have some hand or this ball will go dead straight on you.  been using high pin and or high label drillings forever it seems, great drill for length and plenty of pop on the back for those with 400+ revs

Every ball I have in my arsenal has just about the max finger wieght.  You don't need high pin locations to acheive this.  Just like you have stated.

Now these layouts are not just about max finger weight.  The pin location being that high helps the ball get a lot of length.  This layout is good for really dry mid lanes.

Take a look at Jeff U. angular one vids.  He shows the difference between the pin above the bridge and the really high pin.  Even though both pins are about the same length from his pap.  The higher pin is going to go longer.

This is not just a max finger weight layout.

yes i agree with that, longer higher pins promote more length, max finger promotes bigger move on the back, but for revs challanged people the two fight each other and the longer higher pin wins out
