Maverick Pearl
« on: July 22, 2017, 02:44:58 PM »
Hello Folks,
I'm looking for a STRONG pearl so I am considering the Maverick Pearl so for those that are using it could you tell your feelings about it and its been a while since I bought an Ebonite ball so I have to ask, do the covers last a lot longer now, also feel free to suggest another STRONG pearl.

Thanks, Jake

The covers have been fine for years now, that is old news.

It seems to be the most popular choice among ebonite staff members for their strong pearl across the 4 brands

I predominatly throw Storm since my school is sponsored by them, but we are able to throw all brands. Watching many friends throw the Maverick Pearl in various competitions tells me thst this one is legit. Definitely one of the better shiny balls on the market. I wouldn't overthink it. Just get one and put one of tour favorite layouts on it.

If I was going to get a strong symmetric EBI pearl I would go with the Scandal Pearl.  I love mine and the darn thing is nearly ding proof with CFI.  Non EBI the Primal fear gets honorable mention.  As for asymmetric the Maverick is EBIs strongest I think but from what I hear the Tyrant Pearl is a little bit stronger and about the strongest long pearl out there (caveat: but I have never thrown it).

I heard the same thing about the Tyrant Pearl, I was also thinking about the Scandal Pearl too as I see there are a lot of really good High end Pearls out there to choose from.

Yep wasn't easy to decide but I remember the Primal Fear looked about the coolest but remember also hearing good things about the Quantum Fire as well.  Ended up picking the Scandal Pearl because a Faball/Hammer fan and I wanted a symmetric core (only have one asymmetric ball in whole arsenal and actually throw urethane and pseudo urethane more than anything), and for the CFI cover stock and the 3 year warranty.  Wasn't disappointed as the ball action gives me what I was looking for (strong angularity but not skid flip due mostly to my style) and is very versatile condition wise especially with surface change.

My favorite big pearl ball to throw out of all the 4 brands.  It's really clean out of the box and takes surface adjustments very well.  I mostly throw it at 1000 with smidgen of shine on it but I've also used it at 1000 grit on longer patterns with lower volumes.  It's a great piece for sure.

A question about the Scandal Pearl, since it has a special cover is it like the old school type called particle??

and if so if it gets a few abralon adjustments will it weaken the shell? Thanks

No the Scandal Pearl is not really particle (particles do tend to lose reaction ie dead ball fairly quick).  As tough as that CFI coverstock is would need to grind on that cover for days probably to grind off the labels (when ball becomes illegal).  Supposedly some Storm staffer on reddit was trying to tell me how fast EBI balls go ball dead compared to Storm but I don't buy it.  Have nearly 100 games on mine and reacts like day I bought (of course a bit OCD about maintenance).  Haven't throw the Maverick so can't compare personally but some folks really love asymmetric cores (do tend to carry better with a stronger entry angle but tend to be a bit touchier on the break point) and my guess is its slightly stronger than the Scandal pearl but I am a sucker for smoother rolling pieces.  Can't go wrong with either IMHO.

The carbon fiber in the cover acts similar to a particle cover but it's more durable according to Hammer

Well, after league last night I realized that I will have to wait until the Fall league so I'm gonna have to ball down somewhat, like now I'm thinking about the Matrix or the new Mission.

The reason why is my house generally has a lower medium oil shot for Summer which means my higher end balls are good for one game if that so I'll get one of the high end pearls this September, thanks for your input greatly appreciated.

Haven't come across a house shot yet that my Scandal Pearl at 3000 grit was too strong for (though granted I am a lower rev stroker).  It really does actually handle medium oil better than the flood at least for me (though haven't taken it lower than factory yet).  It might not be too strong even for medium dry with 4000 grit and some polish and or slip agent.  That said for balling down that new Blue (solid) and Cherry (pearl) Vibe look like a good step down at least in the Hammer line (with a decent price as well).

I really like mine.  Sadly it doesn't get much lane time since I got my Crow urethane though.  I absolutely adore that ball.  Nice thing about urethane is lane transition is much less of an issue requiring a ball switch (less need for a pearl).  Then again haven't did league with a bunch of people all throwing oil sponges since I bought the Scandal Pearl or The Crow.  Best of luck to you and I think you will find the Scandal Pearl to be very versatile (especially with surface changes).  It has matched up well with all the house shots I have use it on so far.  You will still want a weak pearl in your arsenal for really light conditions or when the heads are completely fried on a short pattern.
