mission to rant
« on: March 17, 2010, 01:43:03 AM »
ok I am really perplexed. I just read a post comparing my 140 dollar mission to the 84 dollar riot. Now thats bad enough, but the guy posting is the first person to see what i have seen from the mission, that its a medium light ball and nothing more. oil is its nemisis and its not worth the money or the hype. Yeah its a good ball, but i really feel as though i was sold a box full of rocks and i am not blaming anyone for it,I just feel like i got conned. This is one of the priciest balls i have ever bought and to find out i could have had the same ball for 60 less, and to feel as though i was crazy for knocking it is really a kick in the pants. At least i am not the only one honest enough to say something against one of the newest hookers,(street walker whose job is to seperate you from your money for a cheap thrill),instead of berate anyone not seeing the beast you see. No I am not going to buy a riot, but knowing i should have, and seeing the rating of the ball at med light and the mission med heavy,(B s),I bent over again and probably, will again, its just the idea, there was supposed to be a laptop in this box,i got a 200 dollar yellow pages.

Just want to ask a few things:

What surface do you have the ball at? Have you tried changing the surface?
How are the lanes you are throwing it on oiled?
What drilling do you have on it?

You may see what you are seeing because the ball is burning up too early, so it has no power at the back end, so it seems like it isn't hooking. Having watched the Mission on TV being thrown on some slicker patterns, it doesn't look like that much of a dud to me. I personally think there might be other reasons as to why you are seeing this. I could be wrong, I have not thrown one myself, but I have been researching this ball as it is one I am strongly considering adding to my arsenal.

They are no where near the same ball. How is yours drilled? What surface do you have on it? What surface and conditions are you playing on? All of these are important factors. If they are all wrong for what you need it for, then a white "could" be more useful than the Mission.

edit: Jorge beat me to it.

I don't know about comparing it to the Riot, but the Mission is a fantastic THS ball and good on shorter sport patterns. It is in no way a heavy oil ball unless you have some friction to work with. It's still a good ball for what it does, but I do agree that there are several options that accomplish the same thing and are cheaper. I still love mine though.

Whats wrong with the mission being a Meduim oil ball? I am confused.  Does every new ball have to hook out the back door?

Sounds to me like its operator error.

I can't comment on operator error because that is mostly what I do. But, I can say that the Mission, drilled correctly, is at least a medium oil ball. On our THS on Sunday night, a medium shot, once the head oil breaks down, the Mission is too strong in OOB.

In our Thursday night league, which has more volume and actually has an out of bounds around the 5 board, the Mission handles the oil fine, although I have had better carry and less over/under with my 930t.

Much, of course, has to do with ball speed and your type of release.

I will say that i dont believe the mission is any type of a "hook monster".  If it was, i wouldnt have bought it, thats why i dont have an invasion also.

Granted, i have a high rev rate, but i still see no reason for any of these ridiculously strong balls unless ur hitting pure flood.  IMO the mission is exactly what i saw it as, a ball for heavy medium oil, not medium heavy oil....if that makes sense.

I have mine at the box finish with just a bit of polish over it & it does exactly what i wanted it to do.  My mission gives me GREAT midlane read, while still giving me enough pop on the backend.  That was 1 of the main things i was missing in my bag(granted, i carry very few balls right now).  I needed something that would start just a tad sooner, but not give up on the back & would give me a strong reaction but enough control on squirelly lanes.

His mission is drilled pin under at 4 -4 1/2 inches depending on how he throwsa it that day. Mb is at 45 degrees as he requested. I have changes the surface to 500/4000 which helped the ball some.

Seems like a strong drilling for a ball that reads early anyway. Looks like his ball speed may be slow as well. Is the ball using too much energy in the front part of the lane?

I have seen some thrown on heavier oil with some success. They were higher rev players. Considering no one I've talked with cared for most of the releases before this ball, at least it is a start. Ebonite has not been very successful this year in my area and most others from what I have read.

I do throw slower 13 to 15 mph on a good day. I have found a place for the mission,I am only saying that for the money, imo,I wish I had gone another way. I would expect to be able to use the ball on a fresh house shot. Now I dont have alot of revs, but i dont believe the ball is burning up either. Because of the way I throw I need more help from stronger pieces than some. Stormed one and I bowled together and i believe he was using a break pearl on the same shot. I had to add tilt to get the ball to finish and keep my speed down and this wasnt a fresh shot. User error,I might not say error, but may not be as skilled as some of you granted. And again all I am saying is,for the money and with all the other options I dont believe the ball is worth what it costs, especially since I can only use it as a second shift ball. Fresh shots the ball is going to skate, second and third game as the shot breaks down the ball is money, but so is my fast.

you think paying 140 is bad for a high end ball? Imagine living in canada where is cost $250.  The cost of a spare ball is at least $95.  I just used the mission in a tournament and had great success. I was playing the same line as someone using a mutant cell and another guy using his bounty hunter pearl couldn't even touch the pocket.  This ball for me is at least a medium to medium-heavy oil ball.  Just cause a ball cost more doesn't mean it's going to hook more.  I like the mission because it has better carry then my other balls not because it can out hook all my other balls.
