Playmaker
« on: November 26, 2008, 03:00:44 AM »
Has anyone had any issues with the Playmaker dying on them? I know every ball dies eventually or doesn't work like it used. I'd like to think its me and not the balls since so much money is invested in bowling balls nowadays. Just looking to see if anyone had this issue?

the factory polish on mine didnt last more than ten games (on synthetics)
had my pro shop guy repolish with non-powerhouse polish    30 or so games later still shiny.

The GB cover is suppose to absord oil, so it will unless you remove the oil. As the oil builds up, you will see a loss in reaction.

In my expierence wit Ebo and GB covers, they will eventually die..

Only if you don't take care of them, clean them religiously after every bowling session and do maintenance on the covers as needed.

I clean my ball every time I use it with a USBC approved cleaner, and use Abralon Pads to resurface the ball as necessary. That said, my Playmaker after 50 games, is pretty sad.

It just doesn't give the look it used to. The ball motion is significantly different, and I haven't yet found a shot I like to use the ball on in the last month or so. It's just not as smooth, controllable, predictable, and backendy as it used to be.

I'm slightly disappointed, honestly.

The problem is probably with your finishing technique with the Abrlon Pad and Polish. I have one with over 50 games and clean it very religiously after every bowling sesssion and it is as strong today as it was NIB.

Why do you assume I'm at fault?

Just curious.

I don't even use a ball spinner. I use a Haus Resurfacing machine.

On the 2 occasions that a ball spinner was used, it wasn't done by me. It was done first by Dino Castillo, then by Bill O'Neill the second time. So, you're accusing me that either: 1. Dino/Bill don't know how to resurface a ball. Or 2. the Haus Machine is faulty.

If that's the case, that's fine...but please don't assume I'm at fault. People are always so quick to assume that the bowler is at fault when a ball dies. Ball death happens. I'm not b!tching about it. I'm providing my experience.

Doesn't happen that fast if the ball is properly maintained. If not sanded back to the correct grit or polished exactly like it came from the factory, that would be a problem. If the ball wasn't cleaned religiously after every bowling session, then it is probably oil soaked and that will be a problem and simply resurfacing it isn't going to put it back like it came NIB.

Notice my original response. I said I clean the ball after every use with a USBC approved cleaner.  I have done everything reccommended by Ebonite to maintain the original reaction of the ball.

If you're set on this being my fault, fine. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Dameditty asked for my experience. I agreed with his original post. I will continue to agree with his post until the ball shows otherwise.

If you would like to come to Bakersfield and teach me how to properly maintain the ball (this is not sarcasm) I would love to learn. Bowling is a learning game. However, because you do not know how I have maintained the ball, you are not in a position to pass judgement on whether or not my opinion is correct, much less on whether I am capable and competent enough to maintain my equipment.

Rocker,
You need to do an oil extracton on Ebonite covers about every 50 games or so due to the fact that their covers have higher absorbtion rates than others. The Hot Water bath is simple and effective. As Brick stated, a resurface won't get you there if the cover is oil clogged. Noboby's fault, just sometimes steps are left out or forgotten or not known by people. So before you give up, take the coverstock down to 500grit, extract oil, then take the ball back to factory OOB. Good Luck!

I'm not complaining!

There's nothing WRONG with the ball. I just don't care for it since the ball motion has changed...most likely due to "ball death". I've taken these so called steps to maintain it. Trust me, I've done this stuff. I'm not retarded. I've been bowling a lot longer than people give me credit for. I'm not sure where the personal jumps come from that I'm unable to take care of my stuff.

Let me take all of those who cannot trust me on the magical journey of the history of my Playmaker.

1. Got the ball
2. Dino Castillo took it down to 2000 Abralon
3. Threw it 6 games, cleaned it with USBC approved ball cleaner
4. Bill O'Niell took it to 4000 with polish
5. Threw it 6 games, cleaned it with USBC approved ball cleaner
6. Various practice sessions and leagues, cleaning with USBC approved ball cleaner after EVERY SET. NO EXCEPTIONS.
7. about every 15 (depending on how the ball looks to be holding up) games, using the Ebonite instructions to take the ball back to out of box finish on a Haus Resurfacing machine.
8. After 50-60 games, use a rejuvenator, then use Haus Resurfacing to take the ball back to box finish, continuing to use a USBC approved ball cleaner after every set.

Not sure how this post became about my supposed 'inability' to maintain my playmaker.

Here is what really happened:

Dameditty: has anyone had issues with the playmaker dying on them?

Rockerbowler18: Yes. Even though I've maintained it well, I don't get the same look I used to.

Where from this do brick and yourself gather that I am incompetent and incapable of maintaining my own equipment?

This is your 1st mention of oil extraction(rejuvenator) which if you would have included it earlier in your post I would have not responded and won't in the future. Nothing incompetent about it, just suggestions being made when you don't put all the facts out. Don't take things so personally when that is not the intent.

Been there, done that..still died..

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!

According to some people, that's not possible unless it's your fault.

I am with you. Been there, done that, still died. Not complaining. It is what it is. I still throw it, but it doesn't give me the out of box look. No matter what you do to a ball, you will never EVER get the same look as right out of the box.

No problems with mine, going about 90 games.  No special regimen either.  Just wipe with cloth damp with energizer cleaner after each shot.
