my friend got a playmaker and sometimes it's to powerful for him. Would the backend weaken a bit if we put some polish on it?

Delayed Reaction or go to 4k abralon and make the surface eat up the energy to kill some back end.

Polish will actually make the ball react stronger on the backend.....it will actually "grab" the dry boards. The polish will only get the ball to get down the lane further before it makes it's turn. It may help but will probably be more angular off the spot. Try using a lower surface grit and leave it dull and see if it helps. You can always add a very light shine to it if he doesn't get enough kick...

I would suggest that he learn to manipulate his hand position.  The Playmaker reacts very well to release changes.

Otherwise, what's he going to do?  Throw a couple shots in warmup and then take it in for some polish if it's over-reacting?

Only if the lane conditions get too oily.  When you polish, you give away traction.  So be sure the lane condtions are matched to the polishing of the ball.  
 
Also, different grits under the polish will give a different "read" at the breakpoint.  Hope to have helped.

My playmaker was really jumpy when I first got it. Then, after a week or two, it tamed down enough to be able to control it a little better. I threw my first sanctioned 300 game with one, as well as the second, third and fourth... all within a month!

It's a good ball. I may get another to hold on to for a while, before they get discontinued, just so I can get it drilled up at a later date.
