XXcel Beautiful Disappointmen!
« on: December 12, 2005, 04:28:35 PM »
I recently purchased the XXcel with false expectations that it would have a strong back end turn. Tonight was my first night out with it, and averaging 150 I only knocked down 2 pins in the first frame finishing with a 128 in my first game. By the time I finally figured out what I was doing wrong, I really began to enjoy the dynamics of it's reactions. I wasn't able to get it to go straight with a strong back end. It actually has a smooth arc to the pock when it comes back to the pocket. Once again when it didn't make it to the pocket it was due to user error. By the end of my 3rd game, I'd learned to either speed the ball up or slow it down to make it do exactly as I pleased. The only problem was, I noticed that a track was starting to be burnt onto the ball. At the first sign of this, my heart was broken. I had to put the ball in the bag for its own good. I bought it from im4x4nut for $60.00 shipped. I wish there was enough oil to use it at my house, but there just isn't. Can anyone tell me how to prevent burning a track in the ball? I would polish it in the house machine, but I don't want to ruin it's reaction. Should I just keep it for when I go elsewhere to bowl, and not use it where it would be self-destructive to do so? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had a similar experience with my XXcel: when you use it on dry lanes or quite dirty surfaces, the ball tracks out easily. You can clean it up after a game on this turf to get rid of old oil and grease remnants, but I simply would not use the ball on short or burnt patterns. It was not designed for this, it is just too strong (it is a solid, light load particle!). On longer patterns, the ball works like a charm for me, goes long and starts curving towards the pocket with relentless force. But if the track burns up or on pattrens of 35' or less - just do not use it. It will not score, and you risk the surface.

Yeah, there is no oil or dirt on the ball when it returns, just a track mark. That's why I put it away. In my opinion the reaction was perfect. I'm a higher speed low rev bowler, and it was great finally being able to get the ball to do just what I wanted, but it wasn't worth the sacrifice of the coverstock. Would polishing help or hinder it's performance, or should I leave it in the bag?

You should try to polish it up, especially when the ball works for you (higher speed, lower revs). The box finish is 1000 grit polished, maybe try a higher grit (1500 or even 2000) and then add some polish. Nevertheless, since the XXcel is a particle ball, polishing will give you some length for some time, but it will stay "grippy". The danger of burning out is still given, more than with a "simple" solid reactive would be. I'd try some high grit sanding plus polish. You will not need a resurfacing, just the surface prep, and test it for some games - especially if it tracks out again and how long the new surface lasts on the dry lanes you play. I guess it will not go well for long and that the ball is simply "too much"?
