Latest Information, From a fellow Ebayer(this will help clear up common misconceptions about this bowling ball);
"Hi, here is a little more information for you on the sur d ball. I used to sell them back in the day and know all about them. In the early 70s Don McCune was soaking his plastic balls in MEK to make them softer. ABC said it was dangerous to do so and made it illegal to alter the surface of balls. Columbia then came out with a ball called the Shore D in 1974 which had a hardness of around 50 to 60 and the bowling scores went way up so ABC made a hardness rule of 72. That is when Columbia made the Sur D and the yellow Dot. the first were made in 1975 Your Sur D should have a hardness of around 75. The first number is the year it was made so yours was made in 1976. The letter designates the month and the P series is usually the best of the bunch. I wish I had some extra cash to buy it but I don't. I wish you luck and who ever wins has a great bowling ball."
I believe this bowling ball was made way back in the 1970s, It is a brown pearlized urethane with an extremely soft cover. Chemicals & temperature can affect this ball & its serface in a number of ways. The pros on TV once would use these balls. Back then they called them the soakers & they would litterely soak the balls in different types of substances to obtain different reactions. I know it did clear the PBA, however I'm not sure if it cleared anything else. With todays reactives and increadible hooking balls you would think there would be no issues. I went to see Columbia's Website to see if they had it listed in there past releases & discontinued balls, fascinatingly it is not, I guess this ball is too old to ancient or perhaps it was too controversial to be listed there. I also read somewhere that someone tried to sell one of these things for 500 dollars. According to my pro-shop that I go to, the guy in charge said he wouldn't give it up for less than 200. Thus there must be some value to this old peace of Urethane & that is why I have a modestly high starting bid for this peace. Unfortunatly there is no box to go with the ball, it must have gotten junked somewhere along the line or misplaced sorry. Nonetheless this will be double boxed and shipped out via UPS. Also a word of caution for those who don't know anything about the ball, Id advise putting it in a cool basement or setting when not in use & try to limit exposure to hot temperatures. I've heard of this thing litterely melting in heat & I can say for certain that this ball does swet in the heat. No doubt a great looking ball. I'd say this ball would fit perfectly with high rev bowlers & individuals with slow ball speeds as well as collectors of old uretahnes-this was actually made with some kind of resin substance - ingreadiant.
