A new Hammer ball idea.
« on: August 03, 2006, 05:35:32 PM »
BR. memeber Dizzyfugu, came up with a great idea for a new Hammer ball.  The Black Pure Hammer cover with the Raw Hammer core.  Now that would be an awesome set up.

What do you guys think of his idea?

Maybe we could send this idea to Hammer and see if they listen.

Yes, with my review about the Pure Hammer I realized that Hammer lacks a medium-high RG core in their line-up, to have a better dynamic match for short patterns or dry lanes in general.
Any core Hammer uses is rather low RG - when such a ball hits dry ground it easily "bleeds" energy and hooks early.

One strategy to fill that "gap" is either, as chitown proposes, a weak coverstock like the discontinued Black Pure Hammer's (solid urethane/reactive blend, noone knows for sure - but VERY smooth even on dry lanes!) with a current core OR, what I'd suggest, a tweaked core, e. g. the Raw Hammer's or old Blade/classic Hammer core with a low density nucleus to shift weight towards the coverstock, or adding 1 or 2 flip blocks to achieve the same while maintaining a medium differential. The Vibe core could be another candidate for such a (small) operation.

I think that Hammer could use such a ball well and it would certainly fill a reaction and even condition gap in their assortment?

What do you Hammer users think?

I'd also like to see something in Particle Pearl with the Raw core.  I've got a Vibe on the way to see how that works in the dry.  I think I'll like it since it's a milder version of the Doom cover.

lex, is it purple or blue. Many in my area with the purple Vibe LOVE IT! I've only seen one BLue rolling and the guy is not amused with it. My pro shop guy (Hammer/Ebonite staffer) isn't amused with CT Reactive covers either. Max-Flip is great though.

Purple all the way.  The color is half the reason I wanted it over the Blue.  I also thought the Blue would be too strong for what I was looking for.

WOW, I didn't realize that there were that many Black PURE lovers out there.

I didn't like this ball at all.  The cover was too strong for it's intention, and as for using it on the dry???  NO chance for me.  I sanded it to 4000, then polished the doo-doo out of it, and that ball hooked way too early for me.   5.5' pin to pap, 75* layout, so that wasn't the problem.

I personally hope that is the last of the black pure cover....ever.

I agree with anotherwindup. That was a good idea you came up with ChiTown, I just don't think it is going  to work with that coverstock.

My experience with this ball, in bowling on choppy, brokedown pattern, and dry lanes, is that it is surprisngly stronger than most pearls I've used. Even when it was highly polished, if I could get it to the spot.....it jumped off wayy too hard. And that was with fairly weak drillings.

Nice idea, again, but better pick a different cover.

honestly i believe that would be a great idea but the fact is that the lane conditions today realy dont need something with a medium aggressive core and a urethane cover... everyone is looking for more and more aggressive bowling balls... or the more versatile bowling balls and granted a urthane cover on the medium aggressive core would be quite versatile, the handful of poeple like us that would go for it would not really speak for all of the bowlers across the nation to come out with such a ball.. hammer is doing everything right right now and will continue to go in the right direction with the new releases

Here's Mr. Graham's reply.

"Ken,

Thanks for the feedback on the Doom.  It is definitely a very good ball that continues to get positive reviews from the field.

As for using the classic Hammer core with a more aggressive coverstock, there are no plans to do it at this time.  We are now using a new core in the mid-priced series with the Raw Hammer Doom and Pain.  For stronger hook motion, the Pain is a great option as it is strong and controllable.

I will definitely keep your idea in mind for a possible future release.

Hmmm, (thanks K-Dawg77!), I am one of those who are not looking for more hook or an ever more aggressive breakpoint...

BTW, I persoanlly think that the Pure Hammer is a good ball, but it just has the wrong core for the job it is supposed to do - too low RG, and therefor it hooks that much. The coverstock material is great for light and even dry conditions. There is much potential in it. Let's hope that there might come a Pure Hammer derivate some day. But I am sure it will find not only a few users.
