an oldie
« on: April 19, 2006, 06:34:02 AM »
I just picked up a used Sling Blade, tried it out last night.  I've no idea what to do with it now.  Very clean thru the heads but man, when this guy turns left it doesn't quit.  In 1 game I left 4 splits, each of which were 4 or more pins.  No matter how left I went this puppy went "lefter".  I'm thinking that I'll end up covering a lot of boards with this one, say 4th arrow to the gutter and back (NOT my forte).  When I did manage to hit the hole it carried quite well, but I didn't hit the hole nearly often enough.

I've had some good games with my sling when the lanes were dry enough.mine is drilled neg.pin above fingers,c.g. in mid plane,no wt.hole.clean in the heads with great midlane roll and a controlled backend with tons of hit.

What kind of condition were you on there, Rags?  I loved my old sling blade, and some day I will probably get another when I find a 15.

Buffed to 41 or so, squeeky clean back ends, probably not flat, but not a pure christmas tree.  I've had trouble for 2 years with the back ends in this house - they're always drier than I'd like.  When the SB hit the dry it just took off left.

I don't know how yours is drilled, but I have the pin about 2 inches from PAP on mine.  It still gets through the heads clean, but I think that drilling takes a bit of the sharp edge off that breakpoint action so I can play near the track with it.  It's a more aggressive ball than the Hammer marketing would have had you believe.

This post was a good heads-up for me.  My main house has changed their oil conditions slightly and I've got a spot in my lineup that I've had trouble filling.  My Sling Blade has been on the semi-retired shelf, but it just might fill the spot I need filled, so I'm going to put it back on the team and check it out again.

I typically have trouble with pearl reactives too.  I do very well with light load pearl particles, however.  I don't know what is used to pearlize the Sling Blade, but on mine, there are parts of the ball where pieces of the pearlizing material (mica?) stick out of the ball a bit.  This tends to make my Sling Blade fit kind of somewhere in between a regular reactive pearl and a particle pearl.  It's an unusual ball and somewhat more condition-specific than most balls.

Harry and Shiv, glad to hear your comments.  Just maybe, in this case, it is more the arrow than the indian.  I'm beginning to suspect that I'll like this ball a lot more when/if I hit some pretty heavy carrydown.

When I threw my sling blade, (which I still have but it's 16 so I don't throw it anymore) it was more of a control piece for me.  I should add though that I had NO hand at the time.  It was my first fingertip ball.  I still got some of my best games out of that thing, and I still break it out in particular tournament conditions.  I always had GREAT success on a tough, dried out shot throwing it right up the middle at the pocket.

Oh, and Rags, were you talking about the ball or yourself in your topic title?

Rags..........I had a Sling Blade for quite a while. I finally got rid of it because it was to much of a feast or famine reaction. Very strong ball, carried well but was very over/under unless you hit exactly the right condition then it was dynamite. For me, it seemed it was a medium to light medium with clean back-ends ball. When I got my Vibe, I sold the Sling Blade.......glad that I did.

Rags,

I drilled my Sling Blade with a 1 1/2 pin to PAP, low flare, early roll setup. I love it because I get length and the backend reaction is tamed. While it still is more skid/snap versus roll/arc, it is controllable and never overreactive.
