Ball Between Black Widow and Cherry Vibe
« on: July 28, 2007, 01:25:22 PM »
Lookin for a ball between these 2. BW is drilled #1 layout and Cherry Vibe is drilled pin right of ring. What ball and layout fits in between these. Do i see a Black Widow Pearl in my future ?

Toxic would be nearly as much as a BWP...  I've heard a few people dole out opinions of the BWP that state it's very similar in motion to the BW, just on less oil.  The Toxic would be a more even reaction, but that hinges on how both are drilled.

I agree with J Mac, the Raw Hammer Toxic would fit right in between the BW and Vibe.  The Black Widow Pearl is stronger than the Toxic (I have both) and for me, the BWP is too strong, but when it does get a solid hit in the pocket, dang, it hits really hard!

The fired up would probably fit, but if your looking for something from hammer either the toxic or the doom would be a great option.  The Widow Pearl is quite strong, especially on the backend.  If, for instance, you were throwing the first widow and it began to overreact, you'd have to move much further in left on a typical house shot and pitch the ball to the same breakpoint.  The Pearl will allow you to get inside and play angles that the solid cannot recover and carry on a consistent basis, but it is very similar as far as overall hook, perhaps even more so than some of the other balls that have solid and pearl versions.

I believe the Toxic is also the way to go.  The Doom is going to give you a look that is too similar to the Vibe.  The Vibe is quite angular as is the Doom.  The Toxic will be softer around the corner than the Vibe but longer down the lane than the BW.

Yes!!  For what the ball was DESIGNED to do, the Toxic is softer than the Vibe and Doom.  That does not mean that with a cover prep and layout with the right bowler, that the Toxic can't be angular.

EXAMPLE:  If you take a Doom and drill it with the pin at 2-3 inches with the cg in the center of grip, and take a Toxic and drill it 5-5 1/2 with the cg kicked slightly, the Toxic is going to be more angular.  But why????

The Toxic is supposed to be a little earlier than the Doom with a strong, but controllable backend reaction.  The Doom is supposed to be the skid/flip of the Raw Hammer series. And, of course, the Pain is the earliest of the 3 and the most "rolly".  A ball that is longer is going to be more angular simply because it reserves its energy for the backend.

TWOHAND834, you have these two balls mixed up.

The TOXIC is a sikd/flip ball.  It goes longer than the DOOM and is more flippy.  The DOOM grabs more in the mid-lane and has more of an arc type of reaction on the back end.

The DOOM is going to be easier to control than the TOXIC.  The TOXIC will skate thru the mid-lane better than the DOOM.  These balls are very different from each other in there reactions.

I have had both the TOXIC and DOOM with the same layout.  The TOXIC flipped hard while the DOOM arced more.  If there's a series of bowling balls that I know, it's the Raw Hammers.

Drill a Anger it will fit between those 2 balls nicely.I would smooth the surface a little bit at 4000 abralon or slight polish. You could also drill a blue vibe depending on how your cherry vibe is drilled.

chitown,

I was talking to a friend of mine who happens to be a staff member with Ebonite.  He told me that the INTENT from Hammer, was that the Toxic was supposed to fit between the Doom and the Pain.  A shelf talker on his wall under the Anger confirmed this.  The Toxic is more overall hook, but not supposed to be as angular as the Doom.

HOWEVER, he also stated that he himself is getting mixed reviews of the Toxic.  He drilled Toxics for 2 staff members here in Atlanta and theirs are weaker around the corner than the Doom by far.  But, he has heard that some people say their Toxic is more "wheel" than anything they currently own.  So this is strange at the mixed reviews that he is even getting.

I think that more than anything, it could be lane condition and layouts for the mixed reviews on the comparison between the two balls.  But, Hammers intent was for the Toxic to fit between the Doom and Pain.

Steven, the TOXIC does fit between the DOOM and PAIN.  The TOXIC gives that strong skid/flip motion while the DOOM and PAIN have more mid-lane and arc type reaction on the backend.

The DOOM and TOXIC are close when it comes to overall hook.  The difference is in the way they go about it.  The TOXIC has almost zero mid-lane read and flips at the first hint of dry.  The DOOM has some mid-lane and strong but controllable arc on the backend.

Of course the layouts and lane conditions can cause mixed reviews.  I agree with that.  However, I have owned both the TOXIC and DOOM with the same exact layout.  I have used both on the same lane patterns.  It's very easy to see the difference between these two balls.  The TOXIC has more length and flip, while the DOOM has more mid-lane and arc.

Now I can take the DOOM and give it a strong flip type layout and on the right condition it will flip.  That's normal for almost all reactive pearls.  I can also layout the TOXIC to be controllable with a pin axis type of layout and it's going to take some of the flip out of it.  If you drill both of these balls the same their characteristics will show between them.
