serious post--regarding the big blue pearl
« on: May 13, 2004, 05:14:19 AM »
Has anyone here thrown the big blue pearl? If so what kind of reaction did you get? How was it drilled, what kinda bowler are you and what lane condition did you throw it on?

I haven't rolled this ball personally. I have seen it used on a second shift house shot from deep inside. The ball got good length and had an arcing motion on the backend. What was impressive was the lack of over reaction when everyone else on the pair couldn't keep the ball from hooking high. The bowler was a PBA regional player best described as a tweener. He killed them (750+) when no one else on the pair shot a 600.

I'll try to add some input just from watching my team mate bowl for the first time in league with the ball.  I have the Big Blue so perhaps I can  add some comments by comparison.  My team mate is throwing 14# equipment -- he's been through about four balls since Xmas (wish I had that kind of disposable income).  We are bowling on 30 year old wood lanes --- Oil is 10 to 10 down about 35' (not buffed) Med-to Med/?Heavy oil --- First shift mixed league --- casual bowlers, but also a lot of high average men and women in the league as well -- probably a 50-50 mix.  He is R/Handed but likes to stand on the left side of the lane and throw the ball out -- he does not put a lot of hand  in the ball --- he's got a fairly generic drill on the ball --- nothing sophisticated.  (The house shot favors the inside-out rather than straight-up players, IMO).  I'd say maybe the 12 board, then adjust inward from there for best results).  He left an awful lot of 10 pins with the last ball (maybe not the ball so much as his angle of attack, so I won't mention the name of the ball) --With the BBP it seems like he can keep the ball "in play" more --- swing from the third arrow or maybe the 13 board (at the arrows) out maybe six-seven  boards farther down the lane, ane then the BBP will arc back into the pocket for him --- definitely not a "snap" --- maybe "agressive arc" would be a better description.  Ball goes long but still hit hard for him w/good carry -- he did not have the 10 pin problems with this ball.

I was going to wait and see what you got on this before replying.

Anyway, My personal opinion is that this is the best of the line right now.  The ball is VERY clean through the front and mid part of the lane.   The ball recovers with a strong arc off of the dry.   No real over/under that I have had.

One thing to remember....If you have no hand and need the ball to help on the backs don't drill it with a 5" or more pin to PAP distance.   This ball is excellent but if you need help stay in the 4" range.

I have 2.  I wouldn't bother carrying 2 of one ball if they weren't that damn good.

NOTHING HITS LIKE A BIG BLUE PEARL.

I have 2 BBP's drilled slightly different from one another. 1 is drilled to go a bit longer than the other and snap a bit harder on the back end than the other. My opinion of the ball overall is that it is one of the best balls out there if not "the" best. Clean through the front, picks up a good roll in the mid lane and breaks hard into the pocket. I have played the gutter with them and played inside 5th arrow with them with good results. What do I bowl on? Everything from THS to the ABC national (where I only used the BBP) to PBA patterns on the regional tour. Get this ball and you won't be sorry, my entire league team uses this ball.

I know it says its for medium/heavy oil, but what happens if you throw it on a drier shot? Will this ball burn up? I want something pearl to replace my predator jungle green, because its...well....DEAD! Would this be an ok ball to replace that? I have an x-factor for light-medium stuff, I want this for medium and heavier. Good idea? Bad Idea?

Good idea, the BBP is much stronger than the X-Factor. If you have put this much effort into deciding, maybe you should just go get it and find out. It's a very good ball. BTW, I used it on the longest PBA pattern this weekend and it worked quite well. I like it best on a medium pattern. Good luck with your purchase.

Shotmaker,
How do you have yours drilled?  I have one just sitting there staring at me because I'm not sure how to drill it yet.  I'm above average speed, and could be classified as a cranker.  See profile.
