Black Widow Update
« on: September 21, 2006, 05:00:01 PM »
Well, what can I say other than if the Black Widow were a Brunswick or Storm ball everyone around here would be throwing it! It's just an amazingly versatile ball considering how downright vicious it can be in the backend. Yet, it can be played down and in on heavier, fresh conditions and will still clear the heads cleanly after transition and into the 3rd game of league.

I have 2 BW's. One is oob finish, the other I put on the spinner and applied some neotac liquid sandpaper. This gave it a nice sheen, just about 3 steps duller than oob. #1 is drilled with pin over bridge, cg kicked left for 1/2 oz negative weight and the MB is just right of the thumb. #2 is drilled pin above ring cg stacked and mb at 75 degrees.

#1 has a nice arc at midlane then turns on the afterburners at about 53 feet and takes a nasty turn into the pocket. With the 1/2 oz negative weight it has a tendency on high hits to hookset and trips the 4 pin instead of leaving it standing. I've NEVER had a ball strike on so many high hits as this BW does!

#2 revs up harder after midlane and has a continuous angular movement. It's entry into the 1-3 is end over end. Very powerful. Very devastating but not quite as controllable as #1 when the lanes transition.

Tonight in league the lanes were very oily. I used BW #1 and had to keep moving right going down and in (not my A game). Struggled for a 205 the first game but had 4 in a row at the end so I knew I'd finally found the line. Game 2 I go 268; game 3: 258. to maintain my average at 244.7 through 9 games.

This ball is $$$$$$$$$$$$ and an absolute joy to throw. Hats off to Hammer for making a ball that looks great (no circusy multi colors), has a name that is genius and reacts like a Danger Zone on steroids.

I threw my BW for the first time last night. First impressions; this ball is lousy. It was either strike or split, and ugly splits at that. I even had 2 washouts and I never have washouts. The pro shop said "you have to throw it for 6 to 9 games and get some oil into it and then it will change. Well he was right. And WOW. This ball has great action and movement to the pocket. It gets through the heads great and finishes with power. Great ball for medium to oily conditions. Brunswick's 3 year run of "ball of the year" is over. Great job Hammer.

Just ordered mine this week. To me, the gas mask
core that was in the other Hammer balls that I
threw had some of the best carry of all balls
I have thrown. I will stick with that core. which
is in the Black Widow. Cant wait to punch this baby
out.

It's the gas mask core with FLIP BLOCK. It's just plain nasty on pins. Just give it a few games before you make any harsh judgements. Great choice. You won't be sorry.
