cracking
« on: January 08, 2005, 04:59:42 PM »
These ebonite/hammer balls are really starting to tick me off.  I bought the wife a Vicious Attack and its cracked(surface).  I have had numerous ebonite and hammers crack on me.  Whats the deal here? I think I am done purchasing anything hammer or ebonite.

I have yet to have a ball crack on me(in any company that is)

Is it the driller at all? bc like i said NOTHING has ever cracked from anyone. Only thing to crack on me was a little bit of plug work around the thumb on my RIP. It was easily fixed.

I've sold over 50 Ebonites,s...never had one come back for cracks or any other reason. My wife is a pure Ebonite "nut". She's had 5-6 balls and never had a problem. Well, once, but it got caught up in the return...and...well, not the balls fault. Only a deep scratch which was fixed, but again, not the balls fault. Maybe it's a "run" problem ? Were all the ones folks have had problems with made about the same time ? Bad "cure time"?  I do know, a uy had one crack on him in the thunb when it was drilled, but I still think it was the driller, Ebonite replaced it, but I'm still not sure that was the balls fault. Not sure I trust "that" driller.

The reason they are cracking is the coverstocks on them are paper thin and as soon as they get the least bit cold they crack. That is what scares me about C300's new line, the covers are much thinner than they used to be, but still not close to as thin as ebonite/hammer. I've been a C300 guy for quiet a while now but if I start having the same issues I did with ebonite, I will change from them as well.

what are you doing leaving your stuff where they will get cold enough to crack?

I have 4 Hammers(two of them I use week in and week out and have had for more than two years) and none of them are cracked. The only thing that is even close to a crack is a small spot right beside my fingergrip, but I chalk that up to the drilling/glue/fingergrip.

Andrew, it's probably because their coverstocks are thin, and you live in a place where the average temp is like -10 degrees.

No cracks from Ebonite or Hammer here.  I have had Storm, Track, C300, and Brunswick stuff crack all the way around the ball.  As far as these 2 companies go, I think they are the best out there right now!!

Hahaha, yep.

I recently had an issue with B'wick on a PG, which they replaced for free.  Cool...no problem.  Yep, thats right stanski, I had issues with B'wick, but their CS didn't tell me to go jump in the lake.

This is the fourth Ebo/hammer ball that has cracked on me, 2 Apex intensitys, 1 werewolf, and 1 Vicious Attack.

And for the final time, my equipment isn't left in extreme temps except when necessary, like tourney trips.

agroves, I sense a little bit of aggression in your reference to me. I do not have a problem with you, I just feel that you overreacted from a few bad experiences. Please don't hold a grudge against me just because i express my opinion.

I may have overreacted about the RG, but the Ebonite/Hammer stuff No.  Not after 4 balls....I am not holding a grudge against you but it is kind of insulting to assume I am bashing Ebo/hammer/rg b/c I like Bwick.  I am not a newbie or wicked.

Andrew-  I have drilled over 25+ Hammer balls in the past 18 months.   I have not had 1 crack as you describe.  I am either using these or someone else in the area is.   I have not found any cracks in any of our equipment.   Stating that, there must be something else going on here.

But I did notice that you aren't exactly complaining about the NEW Ebo/Hammer stuff.   You complain about these 4 balls:

"This is the fourth Ebo/hammer ball that has cracked on me, 2 Apex intensitys, 1 werewolf, and 1 Vicious Attack."

Are you serious?   All of these balls have been LONG discontinued!!  I just have to assume that these balls all have at least 100 games on them based on the age of these.

As I stated above.   I have not had a Hammer ball crack on me yet.  I also use grips and a slug.

Have you tried returning these balls to the Pro shop you bought them in?  Ebo/Hammer has an excellent warranty program.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

Just an observation...not an accusation...

I, too, have had problems with Ebonite/Hammer stuff cracking too often.  Certainly not every Ebonite/Hammer ball has done so, but enough to make me a little leary.  I owned three Vortex 2, one of the greatest balls ever, and everyone of them cracked, especially around the fingers.  One of them from the pin to the fingers, one of them from the thumb to the pin, and the other one cracked in the bridge and surface cracks all around the fingers.  I also have had three Big Blue Pearls and have experienced cracking around the fingers as well.  My son has a a Big Blue that has numerous cracks as well.

Other stuff has been perfect:  pearl blade with 100+ games still going great, Sling Blade great, Sharp Blade great, etc.

I don't know if it is a quality control issue or maybe just the composition of the balls which make them more or less likely to have problems.  I focus on the company simply because I have owned all companies equipment at various times and the only company I have had multiple problems with is Ebonite/Hammer.

All this is to say that I will still buy Ebonite/Hammer stuff, but not until I hear about some of the durability issues associated with some of their equipment.

Yes, I am serious.  I bought all of them NEW, when they came out.  Over time, Ebonite has burned me and wouldn't do it again.

D Scott Johnson, I have had other Ebonite balls with no problems.  For instance, the Matrix TPS III-bought new, didn't crack.  But, between the wife and I, we have bought these Ebo/Ham offerings since 2000.  Apex Intensity x 2(both cracked), Vicious Attack(cracked), Vicious Particle, Matrix TPS III...so 5 balls, 3 with cracking....that isn't good odds for the consumer...
