Hows Your Dooms holding up?
« on: April 16, 2006, 03:25:13 AM »
Ok guys how are your Dooms holding up?  Is this the best reactive pearl you have ever thrown or what?

I have over a 100 games on my box condition Doom and it still reacts like new.  It still looks like new.  I maintain it well.  I use factory finish polish and clean it with energizer cleaner after every set.  I'm very pleased with how the cover is holding up with this ball.

I'm also looking forward to the new Raw Hammer Pain that is coming out.  I'm set with my Doom arsenal but want to try the new Raw Hammer Pain if it has the same core as the Doom.

You should check out the BR FAQ section.  Has great info including this:

SCOTCHBRITE GRIT CHART (courtesy of Charlest)
3M Scotch Brite Nylon Pads:
7445 - White pad, called Light Duty Cleansing - (1000) 1200-1500 grit
7448 - Light Grey, called Ultra Fine Hand - (600-800) 800 grit.
6448 - Green (?), called Light Duty Hand Pad - (600) 600 grit
7447 - Maroon pad, called General Purpose Hand - (320-400) 320 grit
6444 - Brown pad, called Extra Duty Hand - (280-320) 240 grit
7446 - Dark Grey pad, called Blending Pad (180-220) 150 grit
7440 - Tan pad, called Heavy Duty Hand Pad - (120-150) 60(?)
Green Scotch Brite is available EVERYWHERE. It's 600 grit.
Blue Scotch-Brite is considered to be about 1000 grit.
(The value inside the parentheses is directly from 3M.)

Chitown or anyone,

How would an OOB Doom work on medium synthetics with some carrydown?  Our mixed league pushes oil everywhere.  Does it require clean backends to perform?  If so, would a surface change to 600-800 work well without killing the original performance design of the ball?  Also, how would an OOB Doom compare to an OOB Track Crunch Time?

I know you asked ChiTown, but IMO:

The Doom is substantially stronger than a CrunchTime....but not nearly as smooth.  I have my Doom drilled 5.5"x 5, which I consider a very weak drill..and it is awesome. Tremendous hit and carry nonetheless. When I first got this ball, carrydown was NEVER an issue. That's why I'm going to purchase another, dull it and get a stronger drill on it....to see what kind of monster I get from that!
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

An OOB Doom works great on med long oil synthetics with cleab back ends.  Carrydown may cause you problems.  Now if you change the cover to a duller surface then carrydown is not a problem anymore.

I have 3 Dooms.  2 of them are drilled the same Pin above the bridge(5.5" from pap) with the cg kicked right to 1oz and no balance hole.  1 of them is box condition and the other is at 1000 grit dulled with a blue scotchbrite pad.  I tokk the ball down to green (600 grit) then brought it back up to 800 grit with a grey pad then finished with a blue 1000 grit pad.

My 1000 grit dulled Doom works great on shots with carrydown.  It has a little more mid lane grab than the box Doom.  It is also a little more smooth on the back end than the box Doom.  There is not 1 oz of performance loss from changing the cover to a duller surface.

I also have a Doom drilled stacked leverage with the pin above the finger to pap line.  I have this ball dulled to 600 grit.  I use this ball for heavy oil.  This ball has less back end but a lot more mid lane than the other 2.  Even with the dull surface and strong drill it strill hits very hard and carry's great.

If you have any more questions just let me know.

Oh the CT from Track compared to this ball?  Actually I do feel they are similar in a way.  I used to have 2 CT's.  The CT was a great ball but I feel the Doom is better in every way.  Basically a better more powerful version of the CT.

Thanks for the input, JJ & Chi.  The Doom is looking pretty good to me.  Even though our league is over except for the roll-off (we're in it for 1st place), I'll think about maybe picking one up later this summer so I can be ready for next Fall's league.
