dead arson, possible to regain out of box performance?
« on: March 27, 2013, 08:29:25 PM »
Ball was great for probably 75 games and lately I've stopped using it since it lacks the power.  I've messed around with other new balls with similar performance and the power difference is huge.

I would estimate that it lost around 15 boards of play, and doesn't move early or at all on the backend.  I cleaned it almost everytime with powerhouse energizer after each set of 3 and usually only after I used it for almost 2 games.  Lane conditions varied, but usually heavy oil.

I'm new to the resurfacing game, but I just got a ball spinner and multiple grits of siaair pads for sanding.

Questions I have are:

Would resurfacing the ball likely bring back some performance?

The hammer website says the finish is "FACTORY FINISH 800/1000/2000/2000 Abralon®", is it recommended to follow those patters for resurfacing the ball?  Or is there another pattern recommended for resurfacing?

Should I sand dry or wet?

Basically looking for any opinions on how you might handle it.

I would say you probably need to have the ball baked at a pro shop to get the oil out then you may need to resurface, but get the oil out first.

Try to always wet sand with any abrasive, mostly for safety, but also for consistency.

Resurfacing will restore some percentage of performance. How much, is impossible to say.

See the video on this page, as a partial clue to the situation:
http://www.ballreviews.com/dv8/500-siaairafter-30-games-t294088.0.html;msg2391223;topicseen#new

I'd refresh any dull surface every 10 - 25 games, maybe sooner as needs be, or as indicated by that video.

Oil extraction after 75 games is a safe bet. 50 games is better margin.

Surface and oil absorption are 2 main factors involved with ball reaction.

Appreciate the input

I called around to some pro shops near me, but none had something for oil extracting that they would do.  Not many options without a 2 hour drive.  I'll try to use hot water of 130 degrees and might throw an airator in with it in the bucket to see how that works out to get some oil out.

I'll test it on an old dead ball that is definitely oil bogged to see if it has results.

I'll post back my results.

Soak it in hot water for 30 minutes. Then drain the water and wipe the ball off with some paper towels. Soak it again for another 30. Keep doing that until no more oil comes out. Get rid of the airator.

rileybowler is 100% correct....I do not know why but the Arson is as big of a sponge as any ball I have seen. Each and every Arson I have drilled has experienced the performance drop that you have seen as well.

One of my customers bowls 4 nights a week on our wood lanes with Infinity lane oil. This particular ball is back in my shop having the oil drained out every 6 weeks. And I am not talking 45 minutes in the Revivor and it's done....I am talking 4-5 hours at a clip here.....

Light resurface and a trip to the Revivor SHOULD solve your problem.
