First League Night with my New Hammers
« on: September 07, 2006, 04:19:59 PM »
So, I get to the center. It's my only handicapp league and one where I tend to be near the top for average (came in second last year). I'm looking forward to an easy night, somewhat less competetive than the two scratch leagues I bowl in. I see Sam Lanto walking in with his equipment (Sam holds the current high average for Nationals over a twenty year span and is a USBC director for Minnesota, former Team USA member and holds 20 Central Bowler Alliance titles). I figured he must be subbing but for who? Low and behold he sets up his equipment on our pair! So much for a nice relaxing evening! I figured he'd be put in the anchor position against me and he was.

I started the night with the Black Widow. I shoot 277, Sam 279. Second match the lanes are transitioning and I struggle with the BW for 4 frames--all spares--so, I switch to The Big One and shoot 245 to Sams 244. Match 3 Sam trips two 10 pins with across the deck messengers for a 249 to 233 win. Totals: Sam 773. Me: 755.

Despite my losses it sure felt good to play one of the areas, even the nations, best and play him tough. I probably should have gone with the Doom and played down and in (have it drilled control) but The Big One was keeping me in it.

Anway, great matches....lots of fun on a very soft, walled condition.

I stayed after and shot 7 games using  my Doom, Hawg Zilla, Pain, Agent, Diablo and punisher and had the best look with the Pain, Doom and Hawg Zilla.

At any rate, I'm lovin' my new Hammers and THE BIG ONE is a great ball to go to after the BW becomes too aggressive (that thing is unreal. I have NEVER seen a ball snap as hard as the BW does).

nice thread...raise's a few questions however...

1st...what equipment was your opp. using and how did he play the lane?

2nd..compare the Hawg Zilla to Bw...as I've heard numerous conflicting reports?

Would very much aprreciate your thoughts....tx in advance!

Sam used a Rampage the whole night and stayed pretty much down and in swinging from 18-20 to 5 or so. I kept moving left and throwing a big hook, that's why I should have gone with something milder to keep the shot straighter.

My Hawg Zilla is drilled with the pin below the bridge and cg kicked out about an inch. This is a very controlled drilling and does not give my HZ a very strong overall reaction from a hooking standpoint. In fact, it is many, many boards less than my BW. What it does do is hold a down and in line very, very well and has a nice strong pop in the last few feet. It hits really hard and leaves th pins low vs. the BW that has such a violent snap that sometimes the headpin flies straight up leaving a 4-7 on what should have been a strike.

I'm quickly learning when to put the BW away. It seems very susceptible to overreacting when the lanes transition and BIG moves are necessary or you're in trouble.

I really like the PAIN. I have mine drilled leverage (pin right of ring and stacked cg/mb). It seems to have a pretty wide variety of conditions it can cover without over or under reacting. Mine goes long and then revs up in typical leverage fashion the last 10 feet and smashes the pocket. Just like the HZ it also keeps the pins low resulting in very good carry and few unwanted surprises on flush hits.

I'm new to the Hammer family having drilled up my BW only a couple weeks ago (although I've had a Doom since last season). After practicing with it I immediately added 5 more Hammers to makeup an arsenal (HZ, BW, DOOM, PAIN and Hawg Wild). This equipment seems to suit my style to a "T".
