Just put my no mercy beat'n in a hot water bath and I was amazed at the results. Before my beat'n wasn't hooking at all but now I have to stand almost in front of the ball return and through towards the gutter. Best thing I ever did to my bowling ball. Just sharing my success with the hot water bath. Has anybody else have the same success?

Anyway here is basically what I do...

I have a big stew pot I use. I use simple green, dawn dish soap and the hottest tap water possible. I hit the ball up with scotch brite then soak it in the water for about 30 minutes. I take it out and run the hot water over it for a minute to rinse it then I clean it off with alcohol. After that I pop it back on the spinner and slap some beans on it.

I get a 5 gallon bucket and put steaming hot water in and let it the ball sit in here for about 15 minutes then i take it out and let it sit for a couple minutes while i wash out the oil in the bucket. Then i wipe the ball with some dawn soap to take left over oil off the cover then repeat the hole proccess over till you think the ball is done. Go ahead and ask if you have any more questions.

Here the process I use for the hot water bath. This process seems to give me the best results by far.

1. Bring the cover of the bowling ball down to 500 grit using my ball spinner.

2. Place the ball into a bucket.

3. Place bucket under bath tub faucet.

4. Turn on the hot water and let it run over the top of the bucket until all your hot water from the hot water heater runs out. I have a 40 gallon hot water heater so it takes a little while for the hot water to run out.

5. Take ball out of bucket and bring the cover back to the grit I want the ball to be at. I do this using a ball spinner.

The bath tub process works really good because the oil comes out of the ball and run over the top of the bucket. It's a very easy process once you have done it once or twice.

I don't tape of the finger or thumb holes. Water is not going to hurt the inside of the ball. The only thing i've had happen from not taping the holes was a grip came loose. I would rather not go thru the trouble of being concerned about taping the holes.

I also have had my best results bringing the cover down to 500 grit or rougher.

On a side note: The Original NO MERCY is an awesome bowling ball. However it's also a ball that needs a ton of maintenance. I have never had a ball soak up oil as fast as the NM. Great ball though!

Talking about maintenance - it is not wrong to put modern balls into the bucket frequently, just to prevent oil absorbtion and coverestock detorioration from the beginning. Not just when you think the orb is dead. Will make life a lot easier, and lengthen the balls life span, together with frequent surface cleaning after each use.

I'm getting a 10" sink installed in the kitchenette in the basement. That (and a ball cup) should work great

I didn't hit my ball with Scotch Brite, but 15mins of hot water+Dawn, the ball was excreting oil. Make sure you don't drop the ball, cause it does become very slippery.

Oh yeah, tape up all finger/thumb/balance holes. Use quality duct tape.

Sherm, there's no need to tape up the holes. Water getting into the holes will not ruine the ball. The worst that may happen is the grip may come loose. I have only had that happen once!

If it has polish on it, I highly recommend hitting it with scotchbrite. I tested it one time with a ball I put it in with polish on it and got very little oil out, then hit it with scotchbrite and put it back in and all kinds of oil came out.

I used scotch brite on my BWP(1 month after purchase of ball), to remove the shine in order to get more bite. Maybe that's why ball leeched out so much oil when I hot bathed it.

I didn't have a spinner when I used scotch brite. So maybe try to evenly scuff up the ball. I'm no expert(obviously) but just eyeing it worked for me.

Seems like most people do tape up their holes. No? Doesn't the ball react differently if the core has moisture in it?
