Low rev bowler, new ball... Hawg? or XXXCel?
« on: August 22, 2005, 08:04:13 AM »
^^topic...

I'm considering getting either the Hawg or the XXXcel and i'm wondering what you guys think...

After reading the reviews.. I'm leaning towards the Hawg, however, there is limited feedback/reviews about it...

I'm a low rev bowler (5'10, 160lbs), 170-180 average, i currently use a Brunswick Ultimate Inferno... It doesn't have quite the hook i'm looking for (although I'm told its drilled slightly incorrectly for my style)..

any thoughts?? I was also looking at some of the Lane #1 stuff but not sure i trust them...

any feedback you have is helpful...

thanks!

Both appear to be the strongest in their company. Both look to start up extremely early and have a smoother, continous backend. Nothing too snappy about them. Sorry, not too much help.

although i've never 'measured' my speed, i'm probably a medium speed bowler...

I've been using 16lb balls since i can remember.. I'm wondering if dropping a pound might help too....

kingpin-  Please check out http://www.hammerbowling.com/goods/balls/detail.php?PRKey=42  for more info on the HAWG.   This ball is a heavy oiler, but gets down the lane pretty far before making its move.   It is quite a bit longer than the REAL DEAL, and hooks more than the BIG DEAL.

Sorry, but I disagree with your assesment that the balls "start up extremely early.....nothing too snappy..."

Sorry, I just heard that both were very early and smooth even though the stats on the cel state that the breakpoint is on the sharper side. I believe in some of the reviews, some said the Hawg was early and controllable.

My apologies, after reviewing the reviews and posts about the Hawg, they all say that it gets down the lane very well before makin a hard arc move in the back.

If you want more backend in heavier stuff, then might I suggest the Hawg. Or if control is wanted, the cel might suit your needs better.

What im going to say here, dont take to it 100% because im just giving an opinion based on what ive heard.

For the XXXce:

I havent thrown or know anyone who has thrown this ball. From what i hear and have read, it is got the same core as the XXcel, just a very strong reactive shell. WIth the XXcel core, this ball should have some snap in the back, but with the coverstock being very aggressive and early, this ball should read very early and have a strong midlane, and being a resin ball, it should hold up in the backends. I feel this ball will rev up very well for a low rev player like your self.

For the Hawg:

Right off the bat, the Hawg has a proven coverstock and a proven core already. THe core, previously used in the Diesel line, which by the way was a very good line, is very strong and should provide a very strong roll through out the lane. Now, the cover, which was a big hit in The Real Deal, and the Saw blade, and is now featured on the Razor Blade, Big Deal and the Hawg, is an aggressive coverstock. I can tell you from experience that the cover is great having thrown the Real Deal multiple times and owning the Saw Blade. I feel that with the particle pearl coverstock, this should have a bit more bite in the oil than the XXXcel, but being that it is a pearl, it should allow enough energy to move in the backend like a resin ball would.

My opinion, you cant loose either way. Really, here, its all a choice. ITs all about price, company preference, wheather you want particle or not. SSeeing as you have an ultimate inferno and you dont like it, there are many reasons in which that can be, but either way the XXXcel and the Hawg will both give you a different look to the Ultimate. Me, being a Hammer Head myself, i would choose the Hawg, bring as i like the coverstock on the ball (the saw blade is my every day go-to ball) and knowing that the ball;s core is proven in an entire line of balls. Nothing against the Ebonite XXXcel, i loved the XXcel, i just feel that to me going with what has already worked for me would be a good choice. So really, if you want a resin ball go with the XXXcel and if you want a little more bite go with the Hawg, but either way you choose you will not be dissapointed.

thanks for all of your help...

I guess ultimately, I'm leaning towards the Hawg... I've never thrown a Hamer of any kind, but have had teammates that that's all they use (and they use them for many years before replacing)...

I'm still torn on getting a 15# or 16#.....

And.. I called 2 local shops and one is selling for $234 and one for $230...  bowlingball.com has them for $130 with a free hook again kit...

guess i'm torn in two places...

regarding the weight of the bowling ball...

i would say go with the 15 lb ball 100%. Im serious, theres no need for 16 pounds anymore. In the old days you needed the 16 pound ball because you had no weight blocks and you needed the weight to knock down the pins, but in todays world, with such dynamic cores that torq so much, a 14 pound can preform equally to or even better than a 15 or 16 lb ball. I personally use 15 lbs, but am tempted to move to 14 to gain a little ball speed. I feel that also moving to a lighter weight will boost ball speed, and give me a chance to have a ton more controll over the ball being that i can handle it. And for you i would say that being a 5'10" guy at 160 lbs, to either go with the 14 or 15. Dont even think about the 16 because it will just be too much to handle.
