Need Help
« on: March 29, 2007, 12:45:02 AM »
The lanes where I bowl have become increasingly dry. Rollout is a problem although some of my fellow bowlers have convinced themselves the lanes are oily because the ball doesn't hook, but I've been taking care of lanes at another house for 25 years and I know if you never see an oil ring on the ball after the 5th frame of the first game they are not oily. Back to my question. Would the blue Vibe be a good choice for drier lanes that include Guardian synthetic heads? I've used a number balls to try and beat this but have started thinking maybe a weak cover with say a label drilling would be a better choice for me since I have a slower ball speed. Any thoughts?

Purple would be better.  Cleaner through the mids.

I would try a vibe but use a long pin to pap layout.

I can't remember where I read it, I think in the review area of Bowler's Journal but they felt the blue was less aggressive. You guys think the purple is. I had a line on a used blue but now I'll maybe have to change my mind. chitown will that kind of drilling be too long? I have that on an RS-1 and I have never really felt I could trust the ball to pop on the backend. I keep thinking maybe a weak cover and stronger drilling may fit the conditon better I'm trying to hit. Maybe the Vibe isn't even what I should be looking at. Do suggest anything else?

I bowl on burnt up lanes all the time ( usually after a 3 man competetive league) and the blue vibe works wonders for me,  I've got mine drilled to go long and strong.  the ball works very well for what it was designed to do.  Makes it thought the heads cleanly and rarely takes an early read, the ball keeps it's energy and then hits friction and pulls back to pocket in a pretty consistant manner.  I've never had the ball be the reason for a bad shot.  the entry angle and good and I think i've only left a few 10 pins with it and thats because I was using the ball in more oil than it's made for and was trying to force it back to pocket.  all in all the blue vibe is a sweet ball and does exaclty what hammer designed it to do.  I give it my recomendation.

Try to get a Purple and drill it with the pin at least 2 inches over the bridge or ring finger, you should get a decent amount of lenght out of it, the Power Groove Dry/R is a good ball as well for these conditions.

Ok, so call me crazy on this one.......

I am going to assume that the bowlers believe the lanes "oily" because, as you say, they are actually "burnt".  My best guess is because their ball is 100% rolling out at their toes, and not retaining energy...thus the perception is a heavy oil.  Make sense?

So, I would first see what drillings are currently being used.  You can use a Purple Vibe (everyone is accurate that Purple is cleaner through the mids), drill a 6 or 7" pin and pray.  My only concern with this, you may see a huge amount of inconsistent ball reaction if the lanes are as dry as you say they are.
So here is my wild suggestion....drill a pin on axis, Pure or Purple Vibe.  Shine the ball.  I think this will deliver the consistency, and with the ball not flaring hardly any, you should see more power into the pins.

Let the firestorm of disagreements begin!! :-)

HammerHombre,

What you said about our lanes is absolutely correct. The lanes are getting a very light amount of oil. When combined with the Guardian synthetic overlay, it's causing the ball to roll very early and have nothing on the backend. If you don't throw with a high speed or can swing the ball a lot (neither of which I can do) then a down and in player is in trouble.

You are positive the purple is cleaner through the heads? If so then I better look for one and ask my driller about your suggestion.

I am 100% positive that the Purple Vibe delivers more length down the lane compared to the Blue Vibe!!!
