Not enough Scandal?
« on: November 04, 2016, 11:58:00 PM »
I'm a long time Storm/Roto guy that every year tries a few other manufacturers balls. I havent had much with Hammer since the Jet Black Taboo. Two weeks ago I decided to buy both  Scandals.  I had watched a bunch of videos and said let's do it.  I am incredibly impressed with both balls. The Scandal is strong and smooth for me 40x4x65 and the pearl is clean and comes hard of the spot when I need to open things up 70x4x40. My ths has been a bit heavier this year and the Solid really starts off strong and carries everything,by game 2 Im moving to the pearl and not missing a beat. Now I'm a bit further left and bit deeper than normal but both balls roll great and have me trusting them both quickly.  I've finally decided to retire my Haywire which I love and my Hywire which I'm iffy on anyway. These two scandals are the best complimentary balls  (same core, different cover)I think I've thrown. For me it's really easy to go 1-2 with them.  I'm surprised I haven't seen more accolades.

The Scandal has been a hit-miss ball for many people, including myself. I bought the ball for longer PBA/Kegel patterns, and the recovery on the downline friction has been less than impressive. My Radical Guru's, my Columbia Swerve, and even my older Storm Marvel-S have been more reliable.

I just took the cover up to 4000, instead of the 1000-2000 range I had been keeping it. I'm going to to figure out if there is anything it might match up to. It's just perplexing to me because I'm usually able to cover prep most balls to get an acceptable reaction.

Regardless, I'm glad the Scandals are working out for you. It just shows how the same ball can be night-and-day in the hands of different bowlers.

One thing I didnt mention, when I brought mine home the cover seriously looked like chalk....I knew the surface would be stupid. I took mine to 3000(500/1000/2000/3000 20 seconds each grit 4 sides) and ball rolled great immediately. I didnt throw it at ob. I have heard the same thing from people in my league with one guy telling me last night my Scandal looked great and he sold his after 2 weeks. I LOVE my Haywire and at 3000 the scandal is stronger upfront than my haywire is at 360/2000(both balls drilled identically)...so the cover must be ridiculously strong...Also I hit the pearl with 4000 before throwing it, strong polished balls are always over/under for me.

I'll be sticking to my Scandal from now on. I do best with it. Hits like a huge hammer at times.
Most used:
Motiv Venom Shock (14)
DV8 Grudge Hybrid (14)
Hammer Scandal (14)
DV8 Freakshow (14)

Sometimes.
C300 Swerve (14)
Motiv Jackal LE (14)

Retired:
Roto Grip Sinister (13)
Motiv Jackal (14)

Given to a no-thumber in the club:
Brunswick T-zone (13)

Might stick with Motiv from now on.

Yea, the surface of Scandals delivered to the shop have been variable. Some are like chalk while others have a hint of shine. Hammer could be doing a much better job of surface quality control.

I got up to the alley today and threw a few games with my Scandal at 4000 (500/1000/2000/4000). I got a much better read on the lanes than I did previously at 1000 or 2000. It was a relatively fresh THS, but I could tell the ball was rolling much better. I could play out being firm with speed, or move in and be confident the ball would turn the corner. I'm hoping it will match up to the 47' Statue of Liberty pattern in my sport league. At the very least, it should be usable in my THS leagues.

I hear ya on the surface quality control. Back in the day (decade ago) I had several Track balls sitting in the shop (prior to the Columbia purchase by Ebonite) and one ball was supposed to be 800 grit from the factory. Open the box and some were probably close and others looked like 2000 or even 4000 grit. No big deal in the long run, but I questioned what was going on. I called Track and the answer I received was "the ones with a higher surface than 800 were probably near the end of the run on certain abralon pads and thus, were smoother and not the true intended grit." No kidding.......but it made me wonder how much was Columbia struggling if the company could not change abralon pads on time....a few months later we got our answer.

Ball is so much more usable at 4000 then the OOB finish. Very rarely see enough oil in my area to use it OOB. Brought surface up to 4000 and loved the result.

I'm new. Do 4000 make it go longer? What does the 4000 do

4000 is a smoother surface than the out of box 2000, it will make the ball go a bit longer
