Switch to Hammer
« on: February 21, 2007, 08:01:18 AM »
Hi

I am considering dropping down to 14lbs again, not totally sure 15lbs is the best weight for me. I have been using Brunswick equipment, which has been quite good for me, but I am interested in Hammer as I've heard some good things about them recently.

I'm wondering what people here think would be the best medium oil ball choice for a bowler like me. What I know about my game is in my profile.

Thankyou
Andy

Andy--

The first place I'd start is just about anything from the Raw Hammer line.  The Doom would be a solid first choice, but really I think you can't go wrong with any of the Raw Hammers.  The Doom is a fantastic medium oil piece, and gives a strong flip with control and hitting power.  The only Raw Hammer I do not (yet) own is the Toxic, so I can't give much detail on that.  I know it is also an excellent medium oil piece, with a very strong backend flip.  The Pain is a slightly different animal, in that it is a strong ball and gets into an earlier roll.  It's very smooth and has an even reaction, and works great on heavier patterns.  Maybe not so well on true heavy oil, but medium heavy on down and this ball is a solid performer.  Maybe just take a look at the three Raw Hammers and "go with your gut."  I don't think you can make a bad choice.  You could also look into everyone's favorite, the Black Widow, but I personally have never had as much success with assymmetric cores as symmetric ones.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

I noticed as I typed my initial reply the Doom was featured on the banner, so go with that.    Also, read the reviews of the Doom to get an idea on how people feel about the ball.

If your going to have any kind of HAMMER arsenal the DOOM should be the first choice.  This ball is one fine piece of equipment.  It's great for med to light oil patterns.  The DOOM's hit and carry is second to none!

I would also look into getting a PAIN to go along with the DOOM.  The PAIN has the same core specs as the DOOM but a stronger solid reactive cover.  The PAIN is one of the best tough lane conditions balls I have ever rolled.  This is a must have for tourney bowling.   The PAIN also has that awesome hit and carry just like the DOOM.

Next, I would look into a stronger higher end piece.  My choice is the NO MERCY.  I know some have had there troubles with this ball.  I feel a lot of has to do with the layouts not being correct for that bowlers style.  The NO MERCY is an absolute beast of a ball.  The back end reaction is strong but controllable at the same time.  The NO MERCY has to be the hardest hitting ball I have ever seen!  This thing blows the pins up.

These 3 balls would make an excellent arsenal.  You could cover a ton of conditions with these 3 balls.  I have each one of them in my arsenal.

Thanks for all the replies, if I do make the switch to 14lbs then it seems pretty clear the Doom is the ball to start with, seems like it'd cover most of the lane conditions seen at my house. Thanks again!

Start with a Toxic, next get a No Mercy, should you find a dryer lane, then add a purple Vive. Besides a spare ball, if you use one, you'll be set for just about anything.

14lb or 15lb all depends on your ball speed relative to your rotation and rev rate.  Too fast or slow is bad period.

Since I have the BW and the Vibe I support both, My Vibe (blue) has a strong drill and gets back to the pocket nicely on med light- light lanes, and the BW covers anything above that.  I like throwing my BW in heavy oil b/c it lets the ball go longer without getting too early of a roll, on medium lanes i have to increase ball speed a bit and force it down lane to make sure it doesn't roll too early.  i personally think i had the widow drilled a little strong but i make up for it.  well good luck with your choice.
