Taboo Spare vs. Polar Ice (Storm)
« on: October 20, 2012, 04:56:03 PM »
One has a stronger cover and weaker core:
Polar Ice -- Urethane (solid version and pearl version) with a Pancake core

The other has a weaker cover and stronger core:
Taboo Spare -- Polyester with a Dynamic core

When all is said and done, which would you rather have for dry lanes and/or spare shooting.

Option #1: Some may say the Polar Ice would have slightly better traction and control due to the Urethane Cover and Pancake Core and would be a better Dry Lane ball therefore making the Taboo Spare their 10-Pin spare shooting ball.

Option #2: Other may say the Taboo Spare would have better skid, roll and carry due to the Polyester Cover and Dynamic Core and would be a better Dry Lane ball therefor making the Polar Ice their 10-Pin spare shooting ball because the Polar Ice will hold the line to the 10 pin better thereby eliminating that possible last second whif of the 10 pin due to the Dynamic Core deciding to suddenly slightly "jerk" off line.

What would you do?

And to some, it might appear that you just need one of these and let it serve duel purpose for Dry and Spares... but I am leaning toward Option #2 personally.

Truthfully, I use my Taboo Spare for both. Drilling it pin down makes the core flip earlier, and you don't have that "jerk." Whenever everything is hooking a lot, I can just slide right, slow way down, roll the ball up 10, and smash the pocket.

The plastic makes it too speed sensitive to really be a dry lane ball, though, as a touch fast and it's gone. No surface + speed = no grab. That's where the urethane will be king, and I think a solid urethane would probably work better on dry than pearl, to give a more subtle hook than a snap.

On the ten pin I feel the Taboo gets the nod for setting into a stable roll on its way up, so if you throw straight at it, that's the way it's rolling.

The Taboo for a cranker, however, is an amazing thing. My brother basically has an orbital release, I'll have to post a video to show, but just know he gets a lot into it. He can use it on fresh medium, and do fairly well.
