Trying to decide on a New Hammer
« on: April 30, 2005, 03:26:59 PM »
The problem is I don't have the kind of technical information many of you seem to carry around to describe your bowling style.  I don't know anything about how my present balls or drilled, nor do I know for sure whether I'm a stroker or what.  (If I had to guess, I'd say I were a tweener...I put some juice on the ball, but I certainly don't crank the ball like some I've seen.)  Again, of course, I dont' really know much about my revs, though if I had to guess, I'd say I have low revs.  I've only been really bowling for about two and a half years and I carry an average of 165.  In my bag I have a Matrix Trimax, an Addiction, and a Sling Blade.  I use the Trimax 98% of the time, mostly due to the fact that I feel most comfortable with it, it just seems to fit my hand better and comes off right.  (All three were drilled by the same guy w/ the same specs at hand, so I don't necessarily understand that either.)

Anyhow, I've been getting lessons and I really feel like I"m ready to go to the next level in my game.  I'm understanding things better and getting a better feel for the ball.  The problem is I don't think the Trimax is really doing it for me any longer.  It seemed to work well for me when I was throwing more up the middle on a tighter angle to the pocket, but it's not working right for me as I try to move outside.  I'd like something more aggressive, but at the same time I'd like a ball I could use as "the first ball out of the bag."  Something that works in a few different lane conditions and has a more aggressive hook than the trimax.  I still have my very first ball, a red hammer, and I've always liked the line.    When I asked my coach, he recommended one of the Deal balls, I dont' remember if it was the Real Deal or the Big Deal, though I think it was the latter.  Anyone else have any thoughts for this clueless fledgeling?

IMO, if you like the reaction of your Trimax, you'd like the V2 Sanded. It's just about the same cover and reaction but with a better technology. My wife had a Trimax, and she says the V2 Sanded is about the same but 'better'. You might also look at the Saw Blade, I think that one might be a 'step up' ball for you. Best thing to do is go to your local pro shop and ask them to watch you and make suggestions. You don't have to buy from them, just someone watching you can offer better advise than online just reading your reactions on the lanes.

Good luck.

Splendorlex, i need to know what oil condition you are attempting to bowl on. If it is heavy oil or not, that will decide whether or not to get anything in the deal series. I feel that you dont need to spend so much money. I think a blade series ball would be much better for it can be used os many conditions. The deals are made for 1 condition and 1 condition only. Let us know

I actually play on a variety of conditions.  I play in the ABT and play 1-2 tournaments a month and each one is at a different house w/ different conditions.  In leagues I play on wood lanes that are usually dry to light oil.

for your league you dont want any of the deal series unsel you can find The Deal. REal and Big deal are for heavier lanes, so i wouldnt choose them for your league. For your league, a good hammer ball would be the sling which you said that you already have. If you want one of the deals for your tournies, go with the big deal. I like the coverstock better, and it tends to clear the heads easier and have a stronger breakpoint than the real deal.

I went to practice today and pulled out the Sling Blade, which I hadn't used since I really learned to throw a hook, and it was GREAT.  It will work fine for the dry/light/medium oil conditions.  For my new ball I will go with something really aggressive for the heavy oil then.  Probably the Big Deal, but maybe the Big Time.
