Vicious Attack, one more time.....
« on: December 20, 2003, 08:23:25 AM »
I polished the VA and then cut it down with a green scotchbrite.  I was able to compare the reaction I got friday night with last friday.  I did see a small difference in reaction, nothing to make me say "wow".  I am considering a trade for a Raging Red Fuze or Monster Scream/r.  I tried the hammer and I am not that pleased with it.  I probably won't be buying anything else even though my wife is happy with her Vicious Particle.  I will stick with my Brunswick, Ebonite and Hammer just don't fit my game for some reason.

GM--I tried it polished and sanded.  It isn't that the ball doesn't hook, it does hook some, and that is the problem.  Hammers website said this is the "most aggressive reactive veneer" they have made to date.  I have older balls that hook more than this thing does.  I am not pleased with the weakness of it, I am pleased with the carry.  It does do that well.  I bought this thing wanting an aggressive reactive ball, I should have went with the Inferno.

Andrew,

Sometimes certain balls just do not work for a person. It happens.

I have also experienced that certain balls, for me, recently, did need 10-20 games to "break-in". This is very unusual in my experience. The balls include a DynoThane Thing and a Morich Hercules. Even small surface adjustments did not make as big a difference. Surface changes were not equivalent to the "break-in", which is even odder.

Also recently, for the Hercules, after drilling it for what I thought should be length and a mild backend, and trying several surface changes, I realized it was not as strong, in its box condition, as I thought it would be. It was far too strong with any dull surface, be it 600 or 1200 grit. So I redrilled it following Morich's Control drilling and BINGO! I got what I needed. Sometimes, you need to follow the instructions. Sometimes you don't need to be creative.

Sooooooo, could it be that this drilling, whatever yours is, it still not conducive or appropriate for your style and your lane condition? I mean, this ball is designed to hook. I am no special fan of Hammer's, but ....

I'll add a lil something here.  agroves you may like Brunswick stuff cuz generally they are earlier rolling than either Hammer or Ebonite stuff.  This is a generalization but makes sense.  Many like Lane #1 for the same reason.  For me earlier rolling balls are easier to read than skid-snap balls.  For carry I prefer the skid-snap stuff.

Scott,

Brunswick can hardly be earlier rolling than Ebonite. Except for the Tornado, Ebonite doesn't seem to know what a medium RG, low RG differential ball is.

Maybe so Jeff.  But I find overall Brunswick balls earlier rolling than many.  Easier to read for many.  Don't you think?

BowlersDream--it is 4 x 5, which is fairly weak but (charlest listen up you'll like this) according to hammer it doesn't matter where the LMB is as long as the pin is 4" from my pap.  I wanted to test this theory thus the 4 x 5.  I don't really want to plug it b/c I am not positive that I will like it then.  If I plug it one more time the changes of getting a decent ball in a trade decrease.  I received a message from a member wanting to trade for a Bruiser.   Iknow and trust the PK 18, I am working the deal with him now.

Scotts33--My highest game (299)and series (771, 772, 774) have all been with my Eonite Werewolf's (3).  I trust Brunswick and I let a friend talk me into buying a hammer b/c he thought it would be a good fit.  I tried Lane #1 for the same reason and wasn't that impressed.  I had the blue Carbide and the Cherry C2, okay balls but nothing special.  In the past couple of years I have tried many balls, Intensity (good ball, cracked easily twice), Matrix TPS, Trauma Recovery, KO punch, but none of them compare to my Big B's.

bowlersdream--Where did I read that??  Right here:

"Hammer Mass Bias Defintion-

LMB--LMB or Low Mass Bias balls will give the bowler the least amount of Midlane roll of all mass bias balls.  Most Low Mass Bias balls will have symmetric core shapes, although you can have an asymmetric core that has a low mass bias (VA).  When drilling a Low Mass Bias ball, by swinging the Mass Bias, you will have very little impact on changing the ball motion or hook style of the ball.  LMB balls will have a Mass Bias value of .0001 to .0005.

With LMB balls, if you were to locate the Mass Bias in multiple locations, odds are you have to put a weight hole in the ball.  The weight hole will alter core shape, and that is what will alter your ball motion.

VA--mass bias value .0005."

That is right from Hammers drill instructions.  If you don't believe me then pull one out and read it.  According to them, I have a high Rg layout best for med conditions.

                0 0o

                 .

                 O
            lmb

o--pin
.--cg

it is around 3.5 from pap
That is hammers defintion as high rg............

I think this is what Andrew is trying to show us.  Look at  this ----> http://www.hammerbowling.com/techcenter/drillinstructions_vicious.php

Scroll down to HIGH RG - MEDIUM LAYOUT

Am I right Andrew?

Since you are a moderate medium to high tracker Your pap 5 1/8 over 1/2 up.  Do you think you selected a layout that was to weak for you?

Possibly Scotts33 but by swinging the mass bias I will have very little change in ball reaction.  I would consider a redrill but that is expensive experimentation.  I traded this VA off last night for a Bruiser anyway.
