Cobalt Pearl ..Cracking ?! *** Updated 12/11 ***
« on: December 07, 2006, 08:52:39 AM »
I've had my Cobalt for a while now and a while back I noticed it was cracking around the bottom of the pin (lower crack in the pics), so I got in touch with Lane #1 and they said keep throwing it and if gets worse then we'll replace it.

Ok, no big deal...So its been a couple months now and now theres another huge crack above the pin, almost touching both finger holes !

Check the pics

http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic.php?u=22402DRJYk&i=987501
http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic.php?u=22402DRJYk&i=987500
http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic.php?u=22402DRJYk&i=987499

What would cause this ? There is plenty of room between the finger holes and pin, and there grip holes are not sharp.

This is really my first ever Lane #1 ball cracking, so I don't really know....

***UPDATE 12/11***

I just received a response from Lane #1, within a couple hours. Damn that was fast ! They told me that this sometimes happens when you:

1: Sharp insert holes -
2: The glue used -
3. Drillin close to the pin

They informed me to go ahead and keep using the ball, if or when it chips out they will replace it even after the warranty runs out.

Can't ask for any better service then that !!!

I had the same exact problem with 3 or 4 of my older saws. I thought it was a PK18 problem, but not sure. It happened to my pearl cherry C2, blueberry, cranberry, & pearl carbide.

I saw this happen to an Enriched Uranium too! Seems to maybe a bad batch/mix. You need to get back with either the REP or PRO Shop where you bought it. Let them contact Lane #1. As far as I know LANE #1 have always stood behind their products. Keep us posted. Good Luck! handmeDN

Not pointing fingers, but are the fingers drilled without any side pitches (ie: do the holes come together under the bridge?)?

novawagonmaster - Nope, the fingers dont touch at the bottom. There is a bit of forward pitch in the fingers though...

Actually, I believe that the finger holes can't be within one inch of the pin, or else it voids the warranty, "technically"  Now with that said, I don't think you will have a problem with getting Lane #1 to help you to the fullest of their extent.  They have EXCELLENT customer service.

If your going to get that technical, every drilled ball in your profile, but 1 (LT-48 Gold Pearl), is voided by the pin distance to the fingers

I know the warranty is 1 inch from any drilled hole, but its not like the pin drilled half through or anything....

I never said anything about asking for warranty service in this thread, except this:

I just don't want the 1 year warranty to run out, then it cracks out...That would suck and I would be pissed
...

I'm just asking if anyone else has had any problems like I having with my Cobalt.

Don't know what causes this, I never had it happen to anything I have had punched from lane #1. I have 7 or 8  of them now and none have cracks in...I even drill an vent hole into my thumb and never had it crack, and they are only about 1/4" away and angled toward the thumb.... I bet Lane #1 has no issues at all with replacing the ball..... I have only ever had one lane #1 ball that cracked and it was around the thumb a little bit.... The Carbide Bomb I traded to Warren300..... and I have had 15 or so.......

Right on Buzzhead...I had a few Saws myself -

Pearl Uranium
Dirty Bomb Pearl x2
HDB x2
Solid U
Cherry Bomb Pearl x2
Black Cherry Bomb
EU x2
Cranberry
Silver Diamond

And this Cobalt is the first I've ever had crack at all...The ball still rolls and hits great !

Rules are rules, if its less than 1 inch away from any drilled hole it doesnt pass and its at your own risk to drill it that way

for the record, ive never had any ball crack on me, my ball driller is top notch and NEVER drills balls with the PIN less than 1/2" from any drilled hole, bevels all holes properly and makes sure all bridges are 1/4" wide.

I also store all of my balls in a temperature controled environment for all but the car ride to and from the alley.

Are you ready for this ?....I bought the ball used, lol. When I talked to Lane #1 about replacement before, they said that it didn't matter because they stand behind there balls regardless what # owner has them.

...but FYI, the ball has about 1/2 between the pin and the finger holes. I have no doubt that it will get replaced, though

Here I'll quote you for that...

And finally -

Being that I'm in Florida, I think that might have something to do with my problem. The temp can change here drastically daily. Actually it can change pretty bad by the hour. I usually keep a couple balls in my locker and the temp in the center can vary pretty bad...Cold one day, hot the next...

my point is, once you cross the 1/2" distance threshold, you're asking for trouble.

speaking of temperature, its freezing here, and ill have 2 balls delivered here on tuesday, hope the UPS guy comes before I leave at 2:20PM.

This is a typical brunswick thing... It is a rewaction with the super glue I think. Ever notice it doesn't happen without grips!!!  My 2 cents   beans
