Thinnest Shell in bowling balls?
« on: March 29, 2011, 12:38:22 PM »
Do all Lane #1 balls have as thin of cover as the Boom R'ang, I was shocked to see how thin the cover was after I drilled it up. You would think for what they cost the cover would be over a 1/4" thick.

I drilled an avalanche once that had 1/16th of an inch cover. Needles to say they replaced it.

Over-priced and over-hyped by the Lane# 1 shills selling stuff out of there garage/ pro shop to make a few pennies.

Should have bought a Utah ball !

Lane #1 balls are poured by 900g. 900g balls tend to have thinner shells than most from what I have seen. Some amount of filler between the core and cover is necessary to get the RG below 2.55 or so, how much varies from core to core and manufacturer to manufacturer.

I hate to say it, but in my eyes, Global 900 might be becoming the new Ebonite as far as cover inconsistency goes.  With Ebonite, it was about performance.  Some would hook like gang busters and revive well, some were just never as reactive and once they were done, they were done.  With Global, their problem seems to be with cover thickness and cracking.  I had one very thin cover (cracked and replaced), have seen a few other thin covers, and have seen many more than average crack  The good ones are good, but more bad eggs than I want to take a chance on.

Telling it like it is.

So are you all saying cover thickness can very from ball to ball and if  so what is the thickness of other BoomRangs out there please post. I am now curious because all my storm covers are over 5/8 of an inch and my boom is less than a 1/4".

Mine is between 3/8 and 7/16" thick.  It is normal for 900G poured balls to be a little thinner then Storm, but yours seems a little thin...

I'm not gonna speak for yours since if what your saying is correct it does sound thin, but as far as mine I wouldn't worry about it being a little thinner then Storms stuff because Lane#1 stands behind their stuff better then anyone else.

Zeusir will thinner cover lead to shorter ball life.

Bigger cores will do that from time to time on any bowling ball. It will also vary some from one side of the ball to the next. Nothing I would worry about. I don't throw lane one but have seen it with many different brands.

I've had one 900Global-poured ball crack (Lane #1 Dynamo X2). I've lost four Storm balls in the last 16 months (Paradigm, Attitude Shift, Thunderstruck Pearl, Dark Thunder).

On average, I cannot tell a noticeable difference in surface thickness between my Storm, 900Global or Ebonite products.
