You know the lanes are dry when...
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:18:36 AM »
...you only have average revs at best and you have to finish the night with a XXXL Starburst because everything else you brought (including a Chainsaw and a mild-drilled AMF Heist) are hooking at your feet.

Not only that, I got my only four-bagger of the night with the thing. Oil is in short supply these days, it seems.

Jess

p.s.: I still say anyone that doesn't have one of these balls as a spare ball and once-in-awhile strike ball is giving up pins, no matter which company they typically throw.

Well one year I was at a state tourney when I lived in Virginia, and my WHITE DOT plastic ball was hooking to much. The only thing I could do was hit brooklyn all night long. sigh.

We had that last year at the Alabama state tournament in team. They were supposed to oil between shifts but "forgot" on the first weekend, therefore they just decided not to reoil between shifts the rest of the tournament "to be fair."

On Saturday, I'm bowling adjacent to a pair where a guy went back-to-back 750-750 in doubles and singles and was well in the money. We go over to the team house the next day and he ends up having to finish his set with a Brunswick Globe Viz-a-Ball and shot about 530 with it.

Here is one thing I have discovered....it is shocking on very dry what an old fashioned rubber ball can do!

BUt there must be no oil near the breakpoint!

PS I have compared an older XXL to the rubber and the XXL was MORE and on that shot!  TOO much!

Jess, I agree. The Starburst XXXL is the absolute best option for TRULY dry lanes! It doubles as a great spare ball. On some of the typical house shots I bowl on, they are so dry outside or in the back that it makes a good strike ball, even on a freshly oiled shot! Sometimes, it is the only ball that will get through the heads and not over/under in the midlane and backend. The houses where I bowl cater to the low rev or beginners that like to see their ball hook somewhat, so they oil short and light.

The lane #1 Bullet is also a viable option here. Within the past couple of months or so i have picked up 2 used ones to help me with the drier than ever lanes/backends at my home center, and I have the first one with a farily weak drill and extremely tame on the cover--white trizact pad 6,00 - 8,000 grit, highly polished with track's delayed reaction on it. The first night of league I got to try this ball out I let a fellow lefty in the league who has a nearly identical span try it for a frame --he had/has been struggling all season with overreaction and early reaction, even more than me, so much so that many nights he ends up using a plastic ball or lots of times a rubber ball, and after he tried it a frame he said that it hooked less than his rubber ball, amazing.

Ive heard great things about the XXXL but my old Ebnoite Clear Wolf gets the job done on the very dry lanes, got to love a plastic ball with a complex core (if i remember correctly, the Clear Wolf is considered a asymmetrical plastic ball but could be wrong).

I know when the lanes are dry If I have to use a Lane 1 ball.

Awesome spare balls

People can (and will) throw what they like for their primary arsenal and, understandably, many won't throw Lane #1. I've moved away mostly to 900Global/AMF over the last year and a half, but still throw other companies.

However, no one has built anything like the XXXL Starburst. Pancake-block plastic doesn't react like that ball does, doesn't roll like it does and doesn't carry like it does. I find it odd that a person who dedicates a slot in their bag to plastic would choose to carry a perimeter-weighted plastic ball when there are other alternatives.

The basic questions are (a) do you see lane conditions often enough that require plastic, and if so, (b) do you want to win. If the answer to those two questions are both yes, then NOT carrying a Starburst is akin to cutting off your nose to spite your own face.

There are several people on this site who are hardcore users of other kinds of equipment but who use a XXXL as their spare ball. For those who say, "I hate Lane #1 and everything it stands far and won't carry a Lane #1 piece," they're giving up pins.

Visionary makes some quality alternatives in urethane and urethane pearl, but if you want to bowl a regional I don't think those balls are legal to use. That's a pity, because the Slate Blue Gargoyle is a helluva piece. I hope Lane #1 is at least grassroots-registered again because I plan to bowl a regional this year for the experience and would like to be able to use my XXXL.
