Diamond Coverstock Repair???
« on: August 16, 2006, 08:17:08 AM »
My Big Kahuna received a little bit of lane damage while shooting for an 800 series, then overreacted a ton when I tried to continue throwing it. I took it to the pro shop to repair and they couldn't adjust the cover to fix it, too durable I'm assuming...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has ever had to repair the diamond cover before. What tools or method should i use to fix it, or is it even possible???

Thank you

Anne Marie Duggan has repaired one that I am aware of. Try contacting her thru Bowlingball http://www.bowlingballmall.com/bowl/ and see if she did anything special to it.

I took it to the pro shop and sanded it with screen!! Didn't hardly do anything!! I can't think of anything else to use but a bevel knife, and am not ready to try that yet.

I emailed Anne Marie Duggan and Legends, no replies yet. Thanks Brickguy221!

i had the same problem with one, hit it w/screen and it did nothing at all to it, use 1000 grit or 2000, it actually cut the ball down. We actually went totally backwards on a kong, started at 2000 and when down to 600 to get it to be not so dull.

Galen Gentry at Legends was out sick today; I've gotten advise from him before about getting an "L/L" ball back to OOB and there is a definite sequence of steps to be followed. Call or email him; be patient ... he will return the question with sound info.

OK, thank you everyone for your help. I have a Kong as well and it wasn't too hard to adjust the cover...but these stupid diamonds!!! No, I loved the reaction I got from this ball. Smooth and never overreacted!! Excellent carry...and I want it back. I shot a 237 today on bone dry lanes and the ball rolling over flat spots

I also heard resurfacing with diamond pads would work as well, but I don't think any pro shops around here have that.

If you have the original Brunswick Trizact pads, they are much harder than the silicon carbide in all the current abrasives.

I'm still not sure exactly what you guys are trying to do. I've resurfaced a Legends New Standard with a combination of nylon pads and wet/dry sandpaper. It removed a good deal of the track I had worn into in this ball, with 280 & 320 grit pieces. I haven't had to repair any chunks gouged out of it; not being a pro shop I'd have no idea how to do that anyway.

If you really need help, why haven't you just called Lanemasters?
On the phone they are extremely helpful.

If the pro shop repaired the lane damage, and you're simply looking to resurface the ball and to get it back to OOB condition, Galen can easily respond to an email with a detailed, step by step sequence of tasks to accomplish this (I have two slightly different sequences for different "L/L" balls written down for future reference); be patient, he has a lot of emails to reply to and other responsibilities ... plus he was out sick on Tuesday.
Let us know how things work out for you !!!

Well, the pro shop couldn't repair the ball, so I need to know everything!!

I will do the labor myself and have access to a spinner and most tools, just wondering how I should go about it...I am waiting for his email. No hurry, but the better I get this ball back, the better!!

Lane damaged and they can't/won't repair it ??? Are they telling you that you're simply on your own then ???

Yeah, they attempted to repair it, then when they couldn't, they tried some 80-grit sandpaper, put a few more marks in the ball, and then said that the durometer came out at about a 50 on the ball!!! Not sure if I believe that, but since it was "soft", they said they weren't responsible...so now that it has no value to me, I'm gonna try anything to get it back.

I find that VERY hard to believe, regarding the durometer reading; you DEFINITELY need to speak directly to Galen ... I have little doubt that he can priovide you with all the info needed to "restore and rescue" your ball.

I agree! With a reading that low, it's amazing I couldn't take a chunk out with a good strong nibble.

I will definitely wait for Legends response and am looking forward to hearing from Mr. Gentry.
