Old Balls: NS vs NS2
« on: January 26, 2008, 04:02:28 AM »
I finally picked up an NS2; been dying to compare it to my standard/baseline oiler, the NS. They're drilled very closely and I finished them both to 2000 grit (in order to compare them to the RG Cell currently).

FYI 2000 grit matte/dull is actually slightly earlier (for me, anyway) than Lanemasters stock finish of an 800 grit nylon pad on top of a high gloss polish.

I was very surprised that on oil suitable to the Cell and the NS, from relatively deep inside (standing 38 to about 9/11 at breakpoint), the NS2 was verging between hook out and roll out. I had to make sure I got it out to the breakpoint with a little extra firmness. I guess what can you expect from a high load of particles on top of a high flaring core, no matter how high the RG is.

I have tried the NS2 with a high gloss polish and this drill and it hooks a LOT on medium oil. Almost hard to control.

Both had the pin above the ring finger and the Cg below it, about 3" pin-CG for both, no weight holes.

Jeff,

How does the Cell compare to your NS2?

I haven't posted a review on the Cell, because I'm not at that point yet. Need more experience with it.

So far, with the same surface, 2000 grit matte, the NS2 needs a lot more oil than the Cell. I can safely say this because while the pin on my Cell is in the ring finger hole, the pin on my NS2 is above the ring finger hole.

When I threw the Cell, it went nicely to the breakpoint, went thru the skid/hook/roll cycle, while the NS2 went from skid right into hook out and if I wasn't steady with my ball speed, it went right into roll out.

Remember the NS2 has a heavy load of particles and higher RG than the original NS. With this surface, 2000 grit, it seems to be an oiler for me. I ned to get to that house when they first apply the oil and see how it reacts. We had a good amount last Saturday morning but it was still left over after Friday night's leagues.

Oh, before I forget, in the heaviest carrydown area, and there was some fairly heavy carrydown, I had to throw the Cell slightly slower (or go inside or outside of that area), while the NS2 just chewed right through it. But, of course, as it stands, the NS2, particle solid, is not as versatile as the solid resin Cell.

Hey thankyou for bringing up the NS2, I had kindof given up on it and put it on the shelf. I don't have a whole lot of hand so I took it to 2000 and used it last night in a house with not a whole lot of oil. Only used it for about a game and a half, was very pleased with it's movement and now plan on taking it to 1000 and using it in a house that has just recently became a soupy mess. So I will see what it is like. But again thank you for reminding me of this jewel and getting me to bring it out or retirement... Kindof missed her.

One other question, I am sure this one has been asked along time ago. But anyway how does the NS2 compare to the Black Pearl?

NS2 is not really comparable to the Black Pearl, FOR ME.
NS2 is way earlier and way smoother and needs much more oil to perform. FOR ME, they were more complementary.

I suppose if you sanded the BP rougher, they become more comparable, but I did not do that. So I can't say how true that might or might not be.

Just wondered, I thought they had the same core. I did figure that just by it's covers nature the BP would be more aggressive off the dry. I am looking forward to the BPR although it is probably going be too aggressive for anything I bowl on.
