Until now, Lanemasters was one of the few manufacturers of honest 2-piece balls.  Dynothane had a few, Storm had a few, but by and large, everyone used fillers around the core.  Most of Lanemasters cores were relatively small compared to others that didn't use fillers; for instance, the Rotogrip planet line doesn't, but the core is huge and there's little room for filler.

That's where the 11-12# of resin comes from.

However, since Lanemasters is bringing out balls that are outside the high-end premium market, they're making core-filler-cover balls (I don't count the Straight Flush or the Arrow).  The Sure Strike is the first such ball from them.

The cover on it is somewhat thicker than some other manufacturers.  Some use 1/2" of cover or less, whereas the Lanemasters balls will be 5/8".  It's pretty new, but the few people that have it seem to like it just fine.

You would never know any difference from the LM balls of yesterday with the 11-12 lbs resin and the Sure Strike.  The ball will and should be ball of the year.

It's my understanding that the "filler" that they use is STILL the same A-1 quality resin material that is used in their coverstocks; there was a previous thread in this Forum on this issue when a roomie asked if it's a "three-piece" ball (which it is not).

laybzz74, that was only for 1 particular ball, the new mid level lines are using filler like the other companies.

Then what's the point of using a filler?  "The same A-1 quality resin material that is used in their coverstocks" isn't cheaper than the "A-1 quality resin material that is used in their coverstocks" for their premium balls.  That's the point of using filler, after all.

When speaking to Fred Borden at a trade show in August, he stated that when developing the "filler" material, they pressure tested it.  Various formulas were used and made into approximately softball sized balls and squeezed with a high pressure device to see how much pressure it would withstand before cracking. They wanted a filler that would not lose any COR (coefficient of restitution / energy transferred to the pins) as compared to their non-filler balls.

I'll follow up on this issue with Galen when I speak to him this week, get clarification, and get back with an update.

LM and Visionary use the most urethane in their manufacturing process.  Drill into any of their pieces and you'll see the difference.

Reason to use a filler for most manufacturers from what I understand is to lower RG. Cost would be another reason I would think.

From my perspective since I have used and do use both LM and Visionary is that their covers last longer than most.  Don't oil soak easily redone to OOB surface and both have a long life.  I believe this to be because of thweir manufacturing processes.

Dyno-Thane's "soaker" covers were for me very long lasting.

Just my take.

My bad ... yes, it's a 3 piece with filler; I was thinking of the Conqueror not being a 3 piece (must be my meds).

My thoughts:
While its core may have 3 pieces, only pancake cored balls are technically called "3 piece" balls. All normal cored, modern balls are termed "2 piece" or dynamic cored.

The SS is a "normal" ball, as we talk about them today.

No, not in the High Performance balls like the Strikes.  They are more typical core-filler-cover balls, though the cover is somewhat thicker than most companies use.  The high end lines (I think the Max Performance and Legends lines) are their usual cover/cover/no-filler balls.
