10 PIN leaves.....??????
« on: November 19, 2006, 12:21:44 PM »
I've been leaving my share of 10 pin's the last few days. It got me wondering: do different drillings have more of a chance to leave the corners. Seems my "go long" pin over balls are leaving more 10's than pin right of ring balls do.

Does a pin over the fingers, that gives a longer roll, then snap, leave more 10's the say a pin right of ring/cg stacked ball, that hooks earlier?

I'm curious about the numbers on this, and if you've ever paid attention to it.

I think it would quite probably be the ball matching up with your game (Cover strength, core, RG, Diff, etc.) and/or the line you play on the lane, more than it would be the drilling. Looking at your profile, sounds like our game is similar with you having just a hair more ball speed. I've had some good luck with not leaving too many 10 pins with my One and my Thing Returns which are drilled with the pin over fingers, but had just rotten carry with a ZR40 and most recently my BW drilled pin over fingers.... based on my normal line. But I can leave 10 pins with just about anything really... just find I have to move some, either line or feet.

I would think...longer pins to pap  (and pins above the fingers) go longer and have more of a chance to increase backens and  get behind the 10... which would leave 10's.

The trick to better carry is to choose a ball with a layout that reads the mid lane (2' to 5' before the end of the pattern) better. This keeps the ball from getting in behind the head pin.

Taps are caused by incorrect entry angle. Period,.... Regardless of the drill. If a 'go long' balls leaves tens......one needs to adjust their entry angle. If a good 'mid-lane read' ball leaves taps.....one needs to adjust their entry angle. I dont think there is any 'magic' formula or number(s) to it. Regardless of the type of ball one uses, the 2 or 3 pin MUST be hit at the proper place to carry the corners.

GENERALLY speaking, yes high rg drills will leave more tenpins.  Why? Well, they have a tendency to kick harder off the dry boards.  That can result in some sharper entry angles which can produce ring 10s.  They also rely on the dry boards in the back much more, throw some moderate carrydown and the result is the same.  The ball will react too late.

However, like Curly said, the angle is wrong.  If I leave a ten pin, I don't move.  If I leave another, I make a small adjustment.  If I leave another I make a pretty big change.

That's correct. A different drilling will only be helpful if you stubbornly insist on playing the same line, feet at the same place and at the same revs and speed as before.

Otherwise, a slight change with your feet (either inside/outside or towards away from the foul line) should do the trick and change the entry angle and impact area that slightly that the 6 will take out the 10.

Well, I got to experiment on this finally. I just shortened my lane up. I moved up on the approach about a foot or so. Simple I guess, if the ball hooks to early, move up to make up the difference.

275, with leaving the big 4 with a BIG tug shot on my 10th frame fill ball.
