But everyone will forgive him eventually.  I wouldn't.  I would spread it around, so every bowler and person who frequents that center knows what kind of guy he is.  When people stop even looking at him, he'll leave.  By the way, that is a crazy story....278 series?

Ditto.  I always try my best, even though there are nights I can't find the pocket with a road map (I love this phrase, thanks Pizzaguy!)

This is one of the reasons I've been writing ABC/USBC about changing the way averages are maintained.

Why should we start over with a new average every year.  For everyone that shoots 50 pins under average, there is others that shoot 50 over.  Seems like it takes about 2 months for the averages to stabilize.  Meanwhile teams are picking up unwarranted games due to flawed handicap.

One answer I got from the old ABC was that a lot of the bowlers do not bowl during the summer and their abilities are eroded.  Forcing them to use last years average would give teams that bowled during the summer an unfair advantage.

What a crock.  If I bowl during the summer, why should I have to penalize my team because the others didn't feel it was necessary.

Another answer was that it would be too difficult for the secretaries to keep up with a rolling average.  After say 7 weeks, you simply drop the oldest weeks scores.  Bingo, you now have an average that reflects current ability.  Sandbaggers would go nuts if this was implemented.

Another pet peeve of mine is most improved bowler.  Every league establishes an average after 21 games and bases most improved on that.  Used to be most improved was based on last years ending average.

Had a guy one year that bowled first 6 weeks with a broken foot.  Raised his average 40 pins that year.

I am lost on that previous response because the leagues we have you keep those avgs you ended up with last fall.  Then within 3weeks your avgs are averaged together.  I thought thats how it goes when you start santioned leagues

I always try my hardest, no matter the circumstance.

I bowled horrible the first week on my Saturday league this year, but that was actually not the plan!  I just didn't expect the lanes to be THAT dry, and I didn't have anything polished that night.  Needless to say, the balls were inconsistent about getting to the pocket, and when they did I left lots of corner pins.  I only shot like a 520 or something.  Embarrassing.  I turned that around with a tolerable 640 or so the next week though.  On my Tuesday league, I came out of the gate with a decent 685.

Even if I shot REALLY REALLY badly and actually got some handicap after the first week (like on my Saturday league), it wouldn't last but for two or maybe three weeks at the most, so it doesn't really matter.

I do, and I got screwed by it in my summer league.  I had an epic first couple of weeks and then it went downhill fast.  I will do it again in the fall because I just play to play my best, not necessarily work the system and win a league.

We work similar ..First three weeks you use last years average, after three weeks you have the average of the 1st three weeks unless it's 10 pins less then last year .. in that case your average is last years average less 10 pins!

I always try my best in league.  Some of my highest sets have come very early in the season.

Our HC League has a ten pin drop rule, so bowling poorly the first few weeks won't help get much handicap.  We use last years finishing ave. for the first nine games, then the new ave. is calculated.

Past experiences in the league have shown that the teams that were bowling well below average early in the season lost the majority of those games.  I fail to see how losing games to set lower averages can help a team win.  Points lost in the first month can come back to haunt you late in the season.  In this league, the winners over the last few years have won the league by less than 5 points at the end of the season.

Let's be truthful here, how many games during the season are won or lost by less than 10 pins.  Last year, we had maybe 5 or 6 games that were that close, and we pretty much split them and had 1 tie game.

I try every night.  I never deliberately screw up to manipulate my average.  Sometimes I screw up, some nights I know I'm not "on".  Some nights I've got problems with my game and I can't fix them, but I don't shoot 278 for three games.

As SrKegler said, some people are down, some are up, and it's just the luck of the draw.  I don't believe in penalizing those who have worked to improve over the summer because others chose not to.  We use our last year's average for the first 9 (12?) games, then compute a new average based on those first three weeks.  No 10-pin drop rule, and those who worked to improve over the summer like I did win a bunch the first few weeks, those who didn't lose.

Coming out guns a-blazin' can really help the team's morale and attitude, so taking an early lead in the first few weeks can really do a lot to help the team maintain that lead.  Starting up with a bunch of losses because your sorry butt couldn't be bothered to practice and hasn't bowled in four months, that can hurt the morale and seeing your name at the bottom of the standings doesn't feel good.

Being new in the sports of bowling with 5 years. I always tried very hard to bowl my best during the beginning and thru out the league season. Not knowing that bowlers with more years of experience, better bowlers and not so good bowlers were taking it easy. Then after the averages are set. Then comes the time to bowl against these teams. Now they have 200, 150, 110 and 85 pins as handicap and they bowl the "best games of their lives". You throw your average games and sometimes your best games but you are against a team that has one extra bowler named "handicap". To be truthful at the beginning of league season I might throw a bad game here and there. Then say: "I cannot get my line yet. My wrist hurts. I did not bring my good ball tonight." This is because a friend said to me, "Hey! What are you doing? Don't you see those people over there sandbagging." I ask. "What is sandbagging?" Then he explained it to me. Just like taking steroids later on during the season.

I know I must always do my best but at 62 I cannot give an edge to any young buck. It should not happen but it is a reality check of how some leagues are played.

By the way this year I will honestly will be throwing by games from day one and see how it goes this season. Tonight I will start rolling. Good Luck!

It's funny how people try to play the handicap system by bowling bad or whatever early in the season or anytime for that matter. People who don't put forth 100% effort all the time deserve no respect.

I always try my hardest.  There is no honor in trying to manipulate your average for handicap purposes.

It is true CPA but a lot of people still do it on purpose.

This is what happens weekly when it comes to league play because of the handicape these leagues are giving.. Sometimes bad bowlers have good games and when that happens I can except that but when you know allot of the bowlers aren't giving it there best we have a problem.

Lets be truthfull - There really isn't any money in bowling league. Win League Money, Team Avg, & Scratch at the most and Crossovers..

The Money is tournament bowling - ThatS when we come accross the PBAs and the real sand baggers...

I disagree with allowing them to bowl with others that aren't PBA'S. They should be made to pay twice as much since they get discounts on products and etc..
