1st Night on Viper
« on: March 10, 2008, 06:39:13 PM »
We started a new round tonight and are now playing on the Viper in my sport league.  It started out like most of the rounds, I was lost and not having much fun as I shot 124 .

There was a lefty on the opposing team who was playing 5 with more success than I was having.  I decided to move out to 5 with the thought I might just find something and if not maybe slow him down.  It worked on both counts.  I shot 171 he dropped into the 120s.  We end up with 2 of the 3 points.

This league bowls 2 games against 2 different opponents.  We move from 9 - 10 to 15 - 16.  I started with the same line, but found it hooking a bit more.  I did start with a double, then a few spares and a 5 bagger.  I finished with a mix of spares and strikes for a 230.

I have bowled this league for 4 or 5 years and never shot over 221, so I am excited.  Game 4 I started with a couple spares followed by a turkey and a mix of strikes and spares for a 204.  This gave me 3 more firsts in this league:
back to back clean games
back to back 200 plus games
600+ for 3 consecutive games

I used my Black Widow and what is amazing about it is I wasn't going to bring it with me.  I was at my home center getting my equipment ready for Nationals.  As I was leaving I decided to grab my Widow out of my locker.

Thanks for reading.  I am excited and just had to share!

ThongPrincess: Great recovery after a rough start. I've found experimentation can be the key to getting things right on these PBA patterns. Viper was one of those patterns that I had to change my delivery a lot to keep from an over reaction in terms of my look (the first time I faced the pattern I had three through the face splits in 6 frames). The last time I saw the pattern I took something a little weaker (Hammer Toxic) and moved in around 18 and swung out to 10... kept the ball in play for a couple of 190's, then when that look faded I went down and in around 9 board with my Gamebreaker for another 197 game.

Keep up the good work and keep us informed of your PBA experience league play.

I've had good games and bad games on the Viper, but quite a few good ones.  My best success has been either pointing it off the gutter and riding the little ridge of oil, or when the shot breaks down moving left with something skid/snap and playing a small swing out to the 7-8 board.  But yes, that pattern can get nasty in a hurry when the heads start to go and the backs start to carry down.  Move left, it hooks early, move right it never comes back.

Thank you!  I had to email my coach when I got home.  I sure hope it continues.  We started the season on a modified Junior Gold shot and I did okay.  The second round was on the Shark and I dropped my average about 8 pins.  Our last round was on the USBC Nationals pattern.  I started out like on the Shark and brought some different equipment to bring the average up a few pins.

My greatest challenge is to make sure and get the ball straight down the 5 board far enough to keep it from snapping too much at the end of the oil.  What's even more amazing is my team took 4 of 6 points.  We usually take 4 weeks to get 4 wins.  We're sitting in the middle of the pack ratehr than the bottom.

Again thans for the comments!

I have had the most success on the viper by playing around 21 keeping it within a 5 board area to the right, and letting it hit the dry and take off. I also have played outside with an agressive ball and it works well too. I like the inside line a little bit better though.
