2 Fingers to 3 Fingers
« on: May 17, 2011, 05:30:01 AM »
Does anybody know how to convert from 2 fingers to 3 fingers?

I am open to suggestion because putting my thumb in the ball doesnt feel comfortable.   Keep in mind I crank the ball from the side position with my thumb on the outside while releasing with 2 fingers so I dont think puting the thumb directly in line with the fingers insert would work..  I have a plastic ball drilled like that and it does feel comfortable..

Suggestion...

Perhaps a hybrid of sorts would help. My uncle throws no-thumb and has his equipment drilled half-thumb like Tom Smallwood. He uses both releases depending on the conditions. His thumb hole is off to the side much like you're describing, and only goes to the first knuckle.

If you have an old junker ball you don't use much, maybe you can have one punched out to test it. Do whatever feels best and most comfortable.

I do remember hearing something about that a while back...

Now I need to find a test ball to play with...

Why the change? I thought, you were "2 fingers 4 life", as well as being the "3 fingers nightmare"

Osku and Belmo both seem to be able to play just about any part of the lane using just 2 fingers... I was just wondering if this was injury related or something like that, something that was 'forcing' you to use your thumb.

My first adjustment with my thumb in the ball was to move the thumb over to the left since it closer to how I was holding the balling before..  This might not be my perm position but a good starting point...

Not trying to be a prick by saying this but I wanted to point it out before it bit you.

I think I am not positive but I beleive that if you can only one hole (that is not a vent hole) not filled by a finger  Meaning if you drilled a ball for a three fingered delivery and it the ball needed a balencing hole, and you were using with two fingers it would be illegal. At a league level I don't think anyone would really care I know I wouldn't but in a Sanctioned tourney State or Nationals that might become I issue.

I am alittle confused about what you are saying or asking.

Yes, I bowl 2 fingers but all my balls have the normal 3 holes like everyone else..

I use the thumb hole as measuring point on how I would like to grip the ball and you really cant tell unless looking extremly hard that I am only using 2 fingers...

I believe he is saying you can't have a thumb hole, not use it, and also have a balance hole that is not being used by a finger/thumb... I personally have no idea how the rules apply there.

This may help, this is from USBC bowling Ball Specific.

Holes:

The following limitations shall govern the drilling of holes in the ball:

1                     Holes or indentations, not to exceed five (5), for gripping purposes. The player is not required to use all the holes in any specific delivery, but they must be able to demonstrate that each hole can reasonably be used for gripping purposes. Any hole that cannot be reasonably shown to be used with a single hand would be classified as a balance hole.

To me this reads that a 3-hole ball c/w balance hole (thrown 2-finger) is a legal ball, if you can show that the thumb hole is usable even though it is not used.

This weekend was the first time attempting to bowling 3 fingers and I feel speechless..   Right now I can avg 160 with this new style of bowling but completely lost...  Going from swinger to complete straight up the board shot.

Somewhere on the backswing to release I am losing control of the ball and having to hold on tight..  My fingers are killing me and not certain if I have the right inserts..  I will take any suggestions on this transformation...

Well -- I made allot of progress and now can hook the entire lane with ball speed....  But I havent learned control yet and going to work on my back swing..  That is one element with 2 fingers i never had to do..    The dude said on 4 steps the first step you shouldnt pull the ball back but on the 2nd steps is when you pull back and let gravity help you..    Wish me luck...
