2 - Lane Courtesy (League/Tourney Vs. PBA)
« on: April 19, 2005, 01:54:30 AM »
Hi everyone...

Just wondering. Does the PBA (National Tour & Regionals) use the common Two Lane Courtesy most tournaments and some leagues entertain or do they have a variation of it?

Thanks!

Its a variation of it and goes faster than league play if used properly, I forget how to fully explain it maybe Pin-Nut can help me out.

The PBA uses 1-pair lane courtesy, better known as the "double jump rule".  What this means in that when it is your turn, you wait for the bowler on you left and the bowler on the right to bowl, then you bowl.  As far as leagues, IMHO, there is no need for anything other than one lane courtesy.

Bob's got it right, both about the process and what can slow it down.  If you're bowling a PBA event as a guest, there will be a meeting before your first squad for all guests at which they'll explain the courtesy rule.

Guys will usually cut you some slack if you slip up once, but people will quickly get frustrated with you if you don't go when it is your turn.

During most league play that I have been involved in, it's a 1-lane courtesy to the right/left of you.  Unless the bi-laws stated different.  2-lane courtesy, IMO, is a waste of time during league play.  Last year it was implemented and the second shift league didn't finish until 10:30pm some nights, (after starting at 7pm).

the problem with leagues is that once you mix in drinks, bathroom trips, BS'ing with friends, smoke breaks, etc...  It's tough to make sure people are at their lanes ready to bowl when it's their proper turn, thus screwing up rythm.  In the pros, they have no choice.

Both my scratch leagues explicitly state 1 lane courtesy in the rules. Both leagues have "elite" bowlers trying to grab 2 and 3 lane courtesy. I don't go out of my way to give it to them. However, if I'm on the approach with a bowler 2 lanes to my right or left, I try to pace myself so we aren't delivering the ball at the same time.

PBA courtesy was well explained by Bob Hanson. The only thing I would add is this: If it's your turn and you're NOT ready to go, step back a couple of steps - it's a lot less irritating to those around you.
