I challenge your league to do the same!
« on: August 27, 2009, 03:53:01 PM »
Went to our mixed league meeting tonight. As part of the league, we always do a 50/50 raffle - with the 50% proceeds of sales going to the league prize fund. Every year, we dedicate one night for that 50% to go to the junior bowlers.

Tonight, I proposed, and they voted in - that whatever week is closest to Veterans Day - November 11th - we'll donate that 50% to BVL - Bowlers to Veterans link.
Great organization - and the cause doesn't get any greater than our nation's Veterans!

Added on edit - this is in ADDITION to the passing of the envelope that occurs every year.

Added on another edit - this is Bowlings special charity. This goes for a great cause - yeah, yeah, I know that they're all great in the eyes of the organizers - but this money goes directly to the Veterans Hospitals - for funding RECREATIONAL projects for these men and women. These are men and women that have already served their country and done what was asked of them. They're now either short term residents of Veterans Hospitals, most recovering from SERVICE CONNECTED INJURIES OR ILLNESSES, or LONG TERM RESIDENTS, just living out their last until that final call.
The BVL funds items that don't come out of operational costs of the hospital. Things like board games, books, decks of cards - in a few cases, there are a few bowling lanes on the premises, and this fund helps with the upkeep of those.

A Sport for the Physically Handicapped
Bowling for the physically handicapped grew in prominence during the years 1946-1948 when the Veterans Administration hospitals were overflowing with disabled veterans. During this period the sport was particularly popular with paraplegics and amputees.

This is why ALL of us bowlers should support this organization!!!!!!!!!

Of course, the overall idea may be good, but I resent anyone who dictates where
I make my charitable contributions.  Yes, I do donate what I can to charitable
events.  As a former teacher, I was giving someone money every week.  My par-
ticular hot spot is the money donated to breast cancer.  It gobbles up much of
the cancer research money and there are other forms of cancer that deserve the
donations just as much.  People will only donate so much.  Backround--my wife
is a lung cancer survivor.

I am with nextbowler. I am make my contributions, but I will not be told where and when. Also the Scratch League I am part is all about getting drunk and making money so I don't think anyone would like the idea of having 50% leave the building.

All is voluntary.  I think what mumzie is saying is that his/her league has decided to go beyond the standard $1 with a great idea of a 50/50 raffle also.  I don't know why so many are adversarial or feel they have now somehow been pushed, forced or pressured into donating to a charity they might not wish to give to.  A simple challenge to do the same is all that was said.  Its a good idea and a good cause.  You don't want to do it, don't.

In our monday night mixed league, we give a donation each year using 50/50 money.  We give $800 to BVL, $800 to the youth league at our center and this season because we raised so much money last year we donating $600 to the local food bank. $2200 not too bad, we also use the 50/50 to pay for our banquet and give out cash door prizes.
