899 Series rolled at Plano Super Bowl tonight
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:07:47 PM »
I wanted to say congrats to Bill Fong who shot 300-300-299 tonight in the Monday Mixers 6PM league at Plano Super Bowl in Plano Texas. He left a ringing 10 pin on the last ball.

I wasn''''''''t there tonight to bowl as I am working but Gary (gsback) who posts on here alot texted me after Bill threw his last ball.

Once again Congrats Bill!!

Congrats to Bill.  He posts here too every once in a while.  I have video of the last 3 shots and he was deserving on it.  This just goes to show you that throwing 36 consecutive strikes is not that easy.  All it takes is a little luck to help....and a little to hurt.

Again....congrats to Bill.

just another piece of bowling credibility down the toilet.i agree its a great score and it does take skill to stuff 36 straight shots, but come on every couple of months some one comes close to or shoots 900.i personally dont think individual skill level is higher. this is just another reason to toughen conditions or limit ball technology.i remember when just shooting 700 was an acomplishment, but i guess those days are long gone.

Take your sour grapes somewhere else d**k.

Great bowling...

Congratulations on a great series.  Shame about the last pin standing, though.

Good for Bill. I'm curious, does anyone know if there are any sanctioned 900s or 890s on a sport shot?

Funny, I've heard some regional pros call it this and yet as good as they are, they can't carry anywhere near the same average as they do in their own houses where they bowl.

its not sour grapes.i agree its a great accomplishment,i wish i could shoot 899.im just saying he shot 899 big deal it happens every few months. ten to fifteen years ago this would have been an acomplishment, but the way the game is today with the wall shots that are being put out and the balls that seem to have a magnet to the pocket the game is more luck than skill.how many of us have had a night where they hit the pocket every shot but they only shot 650. why did they shoot 650 because they wernt lucky.if it were me that shot 899 id feel the same way.

It's going to be the age old argument, until it happens to you that is!!

Bill is not your 200 average house hack.  He knows Plano, yes, but he's also got skills to bowl.  I didn't see all of his shots, but Bill is not one to like throwing a bad shot and can read the lane to more than make his adjustment.

I could understand if this were me ....then I would question the validity of it.  But luck is always needed.  Throwing a pocket shot, even back in the 70s didn't guarantee you a strike any more than it does today.  If anything, with the balls and the level of friction created, it might be just as hard today.

please tell me your not dumb enough to think bowling is harder today than it was in the seventies

Could have been reworded.....then again I see you have a new user Id so that explains that.

Anyone with a brain and common sense knows that the equipment of today is not anything like what it was before.  And that same person should have enough common sense to know that said equipment is what makes most of the people bowling leagues as good as they are.

I bowled in the 70s as well, granted, as a kid.  Most of what I recall is not at my level of bowling, but at my father's leagues and all.  I realize that there were not the same level of scores.  My statement, if you read it and understood it, which you didn't.....was that everyone seems to make it sound like back in the days....if you had enough skill, because that's what it took...to make the ball get to the pocket, you were guaranteed a strike.

Did you anyone really say that?  No.....but that's how most everyone comes off when they make a blanket statement like that.

So....next time, read what I wrote.  Simply put....any time period of bowling....getting the ball to the pocket does not guarantee you a strike.....end of story.

I do not think he was saying the shots, and overall bowling is tougher.  More the angles and carry can be very difficult.  Back in the day, there was more one angle of entry to the pocket, where today, due to the technology, there is multiple angles and this is where knowledge comes in to play.  I can see somoen knocking a 700 series due to the shot and technology, but an 899?  C'mon, that requires a lot of talent to repeat the shots.  Whether it is speed, revolutions, angle or spot down the lane, he had to repeat shots 36 straight times.

i never said it was a guarantee to strike these days,i said it was a heck of a lot easier to consistantly hit the pocket now.its like golf would there be so many good golfers if not for oversized drivers and juiced ball ,i think not.

Sadly, yes it is true.  But you do hear plenty that bowled back then state that those that knew the lanes knew the track to the pocket.  This isn't too far off from what advantages people get today, though the advantages are greater today.

Spike2112 and I go back and forth on this between our lanes.  I bowl at Plano and I bowl in another league with my son.  My average is about 10 pins difference with Plano being higher.  But I've been bowling there so I know the lanes.  Problem is that for a 'wall' as everyone makes it out to be, yes, there are going to be high scores at times, the shot isn't consistent depending on the league you bowl in, and the lanes break down a lot faster because of the lack of lane prep they seem to have at times.

Throwing 36 good shots and getting all 10 down on that isn't easy.  That's all.
