A little validation
« on: April 03, 2014, 08:48:51 AM »
Had a really interesting situation Tuesday night.  Our scratch league is after a mixed league, and they don't re-oil.  We usually have varying degrees of carrydown depending on which teams we bowl after, and we bowl on the high end of the house.  Well the end pair had a break down earlier in the day that hadn't been fixed by the start of the first league, so they got moved, and by the time our league came around, that end pair had been fixed and was a "fresh" shot, or it didn't get bowled on (although at this point, the shot was 5 hours old).  So the rest of our league was bowling on carrydown, while the end pair hadn't been bowled on.  My team happened to get the end pair.  It was great in practice, but a few frames into the first game it turned pretty nightmarish.  The track burned pretty well instantly, but because the oil in the middle past the arrows hadn't been touched, it was still pretty soupy, which made for an over/under disaster.

I started out playing 22-8 and by the start of the 3rd game, I was playing 37-6.  A guy on the other team was using a 2k grit Pursuit slow rolling it from 25-8 most of the night, gradually creeping left.  I'm not sure he knew he was doing it, but he was absolutely destroying everyone's line haha.  I watched where he was at and just tried to stay left of him.  Keeping in mind that this is a high average, scratch, no average cap, 3 man team league (us being in 2nd place out of 14 teams all year), I shot 671 and beat the next closest guy on the PAIR by 98 sticks.  The funny thing was that literally half the rest of the league shot 700+, including a 300/824, and a 2200+ set by a team right next to us who had 27 in a row as a team at one point.  Aside from everybody else on my pair, there were only 3 other sets under 600.

A few months ago I'd have probably gone down with the ship, but due to the many "debates" with people here and Rico and Gary's book, I was able to fight through a pretty crazy situation.  I've got a LOT of work to do over the summer dialing it all in because it's still definitely a work in progress, but my head is finally in the right place and that's holding everything together.  Yeah, this was figjam-ish, but the point of bowling is working towards results, and I'm finally having some that I'm satisfied with and it's exciting!

It's easier to deal with 'controversy' with a better train of thought...or a better head on ones shoulder

When you say 22-8 and 37-6 are you saying where you slid and your breakpoint?  Most people say where they cross at the arrows and their breakpoint.

Dear Gizmo823:

Thanks for sharing your "results" ... and you shouldn't consider your post overly "FIGJAMish."

Laydown and breakpoint.  I trace a line from my laydown target to my breakpoint target and back and then go.  Gets my shoulders aimed in the right direction, and then I basically keep my eyes on my laydown target.  If I hit that, I'm usually golden.  I wasn't lofting gutter caps or anything, but I can't say I've had to move more than 2 boards the whole night at either house I bowl at for several months, so already moving 2 boards by the 3rd frame of the first game was surprising.
