Any nice bowling alleys in New Jersey?
« on: July 02, 2014, 10:22:44 PM »
I'm in Southern NJ kind of.. near the Toms River / Seaside shore area. If anyone knows of a nice bowling alley lemme know. I'd don't mind making a day trip out of it. Obviously, most of the time I'd bowl near me, but would be nice to go somewhere different for a change.

In my life I've bowled at a bunch of centers, most of them nothing to write home about. Food court (and the sign outside the center) looks like it's been there since 1970, which is sometimes a cool factor.

But a lot of times the equipment sucks. Nothing worse than a lane always having troubles and your ball getting stuck in the return.

Brunswick Fair Lawn Lanes here in Bergen County is a good facility---always clean with reasonably good equipment. Have a nice meal before you make the drive because the food is nothing special.

Brunswick Zone Carolier is pretty nice. It's where they have held the Johnny Petraglia Open and the PBA Open. Lanes 1-48 upstairs; down 1/2 a flight of steps to lanes 49 - 82. Fairly regular oiling schedule even in the summer; synthetic lanes and approaches, both kept in pretty good condition.

It's at the intersection of Rt. 1 and Rt. 130 in North Brunswick in Middlesex county.

Definitely call to check to open bowling times. Lots of summer school bowling, but they're generally put downstairs.

what are you looking for?

In south jersey (by philly) theres a bunch of alleys.  Laurel Lanes has 50 some lanes, nice arcade area for kids, a nice sports bar with a Tony Luke's inside.

Cherry Hill Playdrome is similar but the bar isn't as nice.

Tony Luke's sounds nice. Kill two birds with one stone.. as I love bowling and cheesesteaks. Just hope I can get the right mixture of grease to make my fingers slide out the ball perfectly.

Yep. I've been to Brunswick Zone Carolier. I used to live down the street from there. I would bowl at AMF Midstate in East Brunswick on Route 18 and when they closed a lot of people moved to Brunswick Zone. I was going to go to AMF when they were closing the place down. I regret not going, because they gave out bowling pins.

Not sure if they still have them, but I find it interesting that Brunswick Zone had all those horse racing simulators in the bar.. took up like 3/4 of the bar and most of them did not work properly or were off.

I would advise against bowling at East Windsor Bowl. Horrible ball returns / lanes. I had a lane that kept getting stuck and they finally moved me and that lane got stuck too. My heart sinks when a new ball gets stuck in the ball return.

Has anyone bowled at Colonial Lanes in Lawrenceville on Route 1? The inside is pretty nice after they remodeled. It looks huge, because it's one long row of lanes. They've got large screen TV's over every lane. I've no idea how the lanes are if they upgraded those or use stuff from the old bowling alley they had there previously.

I heard one of the casino's in Atlantic City has a nice bowling alley, but that was years ago when I heard the story. They said it was weird to be carrying a bowling ball into a casino. You go up some stairs and there it is.

This place looks kind of cool, but gets mixed reviews:

Ever been to Asbury Lanes? I wouldn't by any means call it a good bowling alley if you like to bowl, but it's kind of neat in that they have bands play on a stage while there's bowling going on. Kind of disrespectful to the band, but at the same time kind of cool.

there are no bowling alleys in any of the AC casinos.

Pinsetter isn't a bowling alley. It is a bar that has lanes if you get my drift.  They always have the music on and the lights flashing.  They cater strictly to the bar crowd.

Carolier Lanes is a good facility. It has a nice pro shop.

There was one in Atlantic City.. from Wikipedia:

"The resort opened with a 60-lane bowling center that operated until 2002."

So that must be what my friend was talking about.

The Showboat Casino in Atlantic City had a 60 lane center that operated from 1987-2002. It was home to the PBA Showboat Atlantic City Open tour stop from 1987-1990 I believe. I was fortunate to bowl there a few times and it was a nice place, shame they had to close it down. Speaking of the Showboat, according to news reports the casino will be shutting it's doors next month...sad to see the last running Showboat closing even though it's still a profitable casino...guess we can blame Caesars Entertainment for that one but I digress.

Anyways Laurel Lanes and Brunswick Zone Carolier are arguably the nicest bowling alleys found in NJ in my opinion. The lanes are nice and both places are pretty clean for bowling centers.

I also had bowled at the Showboat! I made a trip to AC with my bowling balls and when I asked about the lanes I was told they closed them down two days before! I was shocked! Not trying to give the impression I frequented the place but I did visit AC once a month and bowling was always on the agenda!

Haven't been there much since relocating to NC but I am sorry to see the place close down. Have many good memories of my stays at the Showboat!

Laurel Lanes is definitely on my list. I'm on vacation next month for 2 weeks. I wonder if there's something in my surrounding states interesting enough to travel for.
