they are professionals that spend the majority of their time bowling in loud, noisy centers.

And if it were a loud, noisy center with lots of movement and commotion it probably wouldn't have made a difference to him.  But there's a world of difference between bowling in a place like that and somewhere that's quiet and still except for one guy.

Most people can go to sleep with, say, the TV or radio on.  But make it silent save for one irregular beeping sound and see if you can still go to sleep.

While I don't disagree with your theory, I firmly believe that you have the ability to block out the distractions - if not then you need to work on the mental aspect of your game.

I have had plenty of times that I have allowed myself to get distracted by what somebody else is doing 3 or 4 lanes down, and I've had times where I didn't notice when somebody right next to me has dropped their ball during my approach.  It's all about letting yourself get into a "zone."

Most people would assume that a professional would be able to tune those things out, and if not then they deserve to lose and need to work more on the mental game.

Well here is my take on it.

Bowlers can adapt to what they are used to. If you watch ESPN classic, I have seen old telecast pre 1995 where the fans were actually SCREAMING all the way through the approach to the release. It never really effected the bowler's why? Because it was constant. Its easier to block something out that is there (noise) than it is to block something that should not be there, in this case noise again. And is modern telecasts there is to be silence, therefore the bowler's focus is not on drowning anything out, so a sound can be shocking. Don't believe me? Go practice @ your local center with one of your buddies and have them call you on your cell right when you get to the line.

As far as how he acted, he did nothing wrong or distasteful. There were no expletives or even name calling, just enforcing the rules that were set in place.

I don't carry my cell while I'm bowling

I've had people fall onto the lanes, 1 lane away and haven't noticed.  I also tend to practice during open play, next to kids who have no idea about lane courtesy.

When I can actually focus on bowling, I focus only on bowling.  Likewise, when I can't focus, I start noticing what people are doing 7 or 8 lanes away......it's mental.

Upon reviewing the video, I do hear two banging noises, one before he begins his approach and the other during his downswing. It did not sound like a cough or anything. It almost sounded like someone kicking something or stomping.

Nevertheless, I stand by my original post. I can totally understand Randy's urge to lash out, considering the circumstances, but I still found it to be foolish. It would have made him look a whole lot better if he would just have taken care of the situation after the cameras were off, if he felt that the guy deliberately screwed with him and needed to be ejected. As it played out, nobody at home knew exactly what happened; all they knew was that Randy had something of a meltdown that made him look like an idiot.

I've been at Mohegan Sun a few times for the TOC and I can tell you from experience that any little noise is amplified in that stadium.  During matchplay someone had accidently knocked over a small object next to me and it made a fairly soft bang against the seating area.  I honestly didn't think much of it, but the pro's bowling at the time all turned around and I was almost up the top of the 1st tier of the seating area behind the lanes.

Anyone have a tape of Randy bowling when he used to use a wrist brace and was winning national titles?

I love his game.

And let's face it...Randy on TV was always good for the game.
A great bowler and star quality type of guy!

I've met Randy and though I can't say if he is a nice guy all the time or not(he was a lot of fun that day...very personable!).  Let's put it this way...when Randy is at a bowling alley...he fills it up WITH RAndy!

I'd like to see him bowling again on TV!  By the way...it was his career on the line.

Let me add that Randy did a bowling clinic recently in Las Vegas. It was very interesting, entertaining and he helped everyone there. Don't know what he would be like "off stage" but a hell of a nice guy in person.

The only "negative" is that he was preoccupied with making sure he got Wienerschnitzel for lunch
