Anyone know if tournament entry fees are tax deductible?
« on: April 04, 2007, 07:20:15 AM »
I entered a new tax bracket for 2006, and need to do some trimming if possible.  I entered 17 times for approx. 50 bucks a pop in Amateur Bowler's Tour events.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

there is a fine line between hobby and business with the IRS, if you can deem it a business then yes they are

I spoke to my accountant recently regarding this.  If you are given a 1099 for earnings in bowling tournaments (USBCs, State Tournaments, Megabucks, etc.), you are able to deduct expenses associated with those tournaments.  Entry fees, travel expenses, food, hotel, practice, equipment, magazines, bowling bags, videos, cell phone, etc.  You would be amazed at what is associated with bowling.  He did warn me as to not go overboard with the deductions.  I'm not sure of the exact process, but if you earn a 1099 and make deductions and end up showing that you LOST money for consecutive years it no longer becomes "income" but it's a hobby and it offsets everything.  I'm not 100% sure about the wording and the terms on this, but he did tell me to be careful.

So basically, I would be claiming my winnings but just offsetting them with expenses.  I can't claim more in expenses than I received in winnings.

talk with a tax professional (I'd skip Jackson Hewitt heh)

As I understand it If you were to deduct them as hobby expenses you'd be required to list income from said hobby as Other Income, and the deductions can't exceed what you made from said hobby. Thus it's a wash in that case and not saving you anything on your higher tax bracket problem.

I'd also imagine with the cash nature of pots etc in a lot of bowling income you'd want to have kept a meticulous journal, as it would be in the same vein as people deducting gambling expenses, or reporting tip income. If you were to get audited best to make it easy to prove which a well organized journal counts toward (don't get caught fudging one at the last minute).

You don't need to be 1099'd to report something as income, however you couldn't deduct entry fees (unless you make a living from bowling and happened to take a loss) without reporting income from it. But the actual thinking is if you as a once in a while bowler with other income haven't won enough to get 1099'd why report it and thus get taxed on it. You could in theory never win enough to get 1099'd but the combination of winnings from different places over the year could put that income from bowling in one of the must report catagories.

It really boils down to hobby or business like triggerman said. If it's a hobby you are capped on what you made from it as far as deductions, if it's a business you can take a loss but you are a bit late in starting the business route for 06 taxes.

Part of the problem is I had to go win that stupid essay contest for 2500 bucks, and my wife couldn't squeeze out our first baby until January (just kidding around here, folks! ), so here I am now on one income and for some reason coming up owing 1900 bucks even though we both only claimed 1 on our W-4s.  We messed up somewhere, I've never OWED before, even if I did have additional income, as I often did from tips in my school years.  Ack!

You would need to file a schedule C, which is for Business income.  And you can show a loss on your schedule C.  I don't remember the rule, but if you show a loss for the same business for X consecutive years, it is no longer considered a business and you can no longer file a schedule C.

It's a little close to the cut off now so you probably won't be able to get an appointment, file for an extension, then spend the money on a CPA to help.

you can deduct anything you want. IRS doesn't check jack anymore. I made alot of false deductions last month and got back alot of money. The government is stupid for letting people do thier own taxes.

You can only show a loss for 3 consecutive years...so make sure that you show a profit on year 3 or every-other.  Rememer that you can also deduct mileage if you drove to said tournaments.

The short answer is the entry fees are deductible from the winnings.

Bowling winnings and expenses are reported on Schedule C.  You are allowed to deduct more in expenses than income.  Deducting the expenses as hobby expenses will give you a bad result.  Stick with the Schedule C.  You will not get the same result; the Schedule C is your best option.

There is a test for hobby vs business.  If the activity shows a profit in three out of five years, it is presumed to be a business.  However, it is possible to show a loss for several years.  The test I described only prevents the IRS from considering an activity a hobby and not a business.  The facts of each situation determine the tax treatment.  If the expenses are legitimate and you have the receipts, do not be afraid to deduct them.  You should consult a tax professional who is familiar with this type of thing.

my sister is a cpa and she tells me you can show a loss for several yeaers before the irs starts to ask questions. her advice: don't be stupid. you can deduct the cost of all bowling related equipment, balls, shoes, bags, etc. motels, meals, bowling clothing, mileage on the car, etc. after several years of showing little or no profit you would be best to start showing a profit or at least money made or count on getting no deductions.
