Anyone throw the Purple Ice Executioner?
« on: August 28, 2003, 09:17:00 PM »
I just got a new Purple Ice Executioner, and so far do not like it.  Not bashing the ball, but wondering if anyone else on here using the Purple Ice has a high track, and what part of the lane this ball likes the best.

So far, I can't get any consistency with it.  If I try playing the outside part of the lane it checks up at the arrows and start moving left, usually resulting in a 4-6-something split. If I try swinging it, I tend to shoot it through the breakpoint for a washout.  Have noticed this on 2 different houses.  I'm not giving up on it just yet, but need some help figuring it out.

Another thing I have noticed is when it grabs too soon, it obviously hits like a marshmallow, using up all its energy at midlane.  When I have gotten it further in the oil and had it recover to the pocket, it hits extremely hard.  I just can't seem to get any consistency in doing that though.

I am a med speed, above avg revs (been told I have a ton of hand) with a high track (non-flaring equip frequently catches the thumb hole and barely misses the middle finger).  Pin is above ring finger (maybe 1/4") and CG  slightly towards the palm - not quite at 10:30, but not 12:00 either.  Thanks for any insight into helping me utilize this weapon.

I have not polished it yet.   The reason I left it in box condition is there were conflicting reviews of the ball.  Visionary claims it to be a control ball for sport/overunder and spotty conditions - BTM rated it something like a 9 for dry lanes which I do not understand after throwing it myself.  I will read your review and will consider polishing it.  At this point, I have nothing to lose...

9andaWiggle,

Personally, I haven't thrown mine a great deal yet, as I still have to get it plugged and redrilled since I got it in a trade with Omegabowler (great guy to deal with). Anyhow, mine is in box finish, pin below ring finger, cg in line below. For me, this ball rolls nice and smooth through the head and makes a very hard arc on the backend, destroying the pocket. This ball doesn't even fit my hand very well, and I've still thrown games of 250+ with it. I have heard some other people claim that they like this ball a lot more when it's polished, and I may try that myself. I would just tell you to be patient and to play around with coverstock prep until you find the condition that it's best suited for. Remember, Visionary markets this ball as a control ball, not a hook monster or a skid/snap ball. Therefore, it's probably going to be a bit touchy until you find the right prep and shot to throw it on. But I can tell you this, I've seen some people throw these on some of the tougher tournament shots that I've encountered, and the ball gave them a look that nobody else could come close to getting. Give it some time, feel it out and I think that you'll wind up liking it in the end. Good luck and good bowling.

Bowling is without a doubt the dumbest, most pointless, most idiotic excuse for a game that has ever been invented. So, what time are we bowling tomorrow?

Thanks Gene, I'm not ready to give up on it, it's just frustrating when you can't figure that new ball out right away.  Admittedly, I haven't thrown it on a sport or overly difficult pattern yet.  Last night was the first time I have seen enough oil to have a chance keeping it on the lane, and I found it to be too much ball to play the 1-10 board, but it didn't recover well from swinging it through the oil.  The best shot I had with it was standing on 28 (I line up here with my right foot) and throwing over 18 - not much of a swing here, but it finally got enought length and recovered well enough to smash the pocket - and in this scenario it hit HARD.  My only problem with this is that I am not accurate enough - If I missed by more than 1 board, it would either sail or go through the nose.  So it's not all the ball, I just have to figure out how to use it in a way that minimizes my own weaknesses.

I have thrown an ice for about a year now and have 2
other people using it. Even though all of us have
different drillings, ball speed and hand the one constant
is the surfaces. All of these balls are factory surfaces
and cleaned with Black Magic particle rejuvenator.
It brings up a very slight shine and makes the
break point and backend very readable. In my experience
this may be all you need. Hope this helps. Pete
