Are there ball companies that target a particular style?
« on: September 09, 2003, 09:30:09 PM »
I know this has probably been asked in the past but I was wondering if companies target certain bowlers like crankers, tweeners, & strokers.

I have thrown Storm balls for about four years. I do like their balls BUT I would like something that matches my style better.

I throw with fairly good speed but I have below Rpm’s/revs. I guess I’m somewhat of a tweener. I tend to make the ball skid. I need something that gets the ball rolling sooner.

I seem to do better with an arcing ball than a skid/flip.

I do have the LRG which is a smooth arcing ball. I also have the HRG and the Too Hot (check profile if you want too). But back to the question, is there a better company “out there” that might suit my style better than Storm and if so who? Or should I just go ahead and drill up a couple of LRG’s in different layouts?

It's just my opinion, but I think unless you are on staff, it's a bad decision to only throw equipment from one ball company.  Think about it... a ball company is going to try to have a line of equipment that meets the needs of most (if not all) bowlers.  Your game is your own, not like everyone else's.

So to be very brand loyal can be a mistake in that maybe only two or three balls from a certain ball company match up for you with your style.  The others will be unusable or duds... for your style.

Meanwhile, there are balls from other companies that could be that magic ball because it matches up to your style, perhaps even better than your current favorite.  Storm used to have one of the best lines out there, but now the other companies have just as strong of a line... albeit still trying to be all things to all bowlers.

So I encourage you to venture out.  Did you know that Storm also manufactures the equipment for RotoGrip and Dyno-thane?  The quality is just as good.  Roto and DT have some brilliant brains behind their designs too.  If you like Storm, pick up the DT Element or the Roto Silver Streak Particle.  These are awesome balls that will give you the arcing reaction you are looking for.

To answer your question... I don't think a ball company makes equipment for one type of style.  I used to believe  that Brunswick was the early hook, big hook company from the days of the Zones.  But now they have more variety with weaker coverstocks newer cores.

Hope this helps.

While more and more of the companies try to design a broader range of balls, I believe that ball designers have "styles" just as architects have styles.  One designer may prefer a more "arcy" style, while another may prefer a flippier look, another may prefer length ...  Each may alter those tendencies some, but lines tend to remain largely consistent with their designers' preferences.  I would be very surprised were it otherwise.  This does not mean one should stick to one company, but there are lines that will be more arcy than others.
