Mo Pinel says its more important to have your feet in the right sport than to hit your exact mark every time.

My target is exact spot but I do not alway hit it. So, guess I play both.

Well I have a miss area of like 5-8 boards on house pattern and it has guided me to a 220 average season on 5 leagues!

People aim for an area instead of a board or arrow? That's the stupidest thing ever, why would you do that? I don't always hit my mark but haven't you guys ever heard the saying aim small miss small...?

Spray and pray! While my accuracy has improved a lot in the last 2 years (esp. concerning hitting my visual target at the arrows), I still lack speed and hand position control to keep the break point well defined - I try my best to be exact, but reality is very different ;)

Nobody is exact. Even the pros have 2-3 boards when attacking the pattern correctly. When things get super tight that is a good indication that your feet are in the wrong spot (as someone said earlier) or you are in the wrong ball.

That said I am always targeting a single board. I am usually telling myself as I am at the ball return some thing like 25 to 9 or 34 to 13. This is the board my feet are on and the board my target is on.

I occasionally spot bowl when the lanes are toast. At those times I am very deep with my feet and aiming at the reflection of the 10 pin or 6 pin (or rangefinder if available). Although this is much less accurate it has led to nice scores in the past due to the extreme speed and angle it produces for me.

I use targets up and down the lanes as a pattern breaks down. When I first line up any THS I start at 25 looking at 8 at the arrows. If I am seeing plenty of oil here I will start by moving my feet right and bringing my target back to the dots. As the pattern breaks down my feet are moving left, my target is moving left and usually down the lane some.

Hope this helps.

It's hardly stupid.  I don't know about you, but my armswing gets really stiff and mechanical if I try to split one exact board.  On the other hand, if I look at a three board area and try to roll the ball over roughly the middle of that area, my mind thinks I can relax because I have more mistake room, but by relaxing, it lets me actually repeat shots better and be more accurate!  I went from looking at a specific board at the arrows to looking at a three board area at the breakpoint, and my average in a PBA Experience summer league (where accuracy is rewarded, unlike a house shot) jumped from a 189 to a 204 in just one year.

One on the bowling magazines(can't remember which one) a couple of years ago, had and article that stated a study was done and found that bowlers miss the mark they think they are hitting by 1-3 boards on every shot. Thats up to 6 boards of area on every shot depending on which side you are missing on.

I'm like Dan, I'll look at the mark I want to try and roll the ball over hoping I'm within a few boards of it.  More importantly though, is I try to get the ball to the breakpoint that I want down the lane.  That is the "area" I am more concerned with.

I use the dots so that I always hit my mark, but the issue is in the shoulder alignment to make sure I hit my target at the arrows and at the breakpoint.

In terms of accuracy the one indication of how accurate I am typically depends on how well I am walking towards my target. Some nights I can delive the ball right on top of the board I'm aiming at, but never more than a board left or right of my target at the dots.

I would note that in todays game accuracy isn't the end all be all to great scores which is why I can understand so many bowlers moving to aiming at "areas." I think we have entered the era of "matching up" as there have been many nights where I'm not missing at all and shooting 650, and then there are nights when I am constantly missing a few left or right of my target down lane and I'm shooting 750 or 300.

I think this is where ball technology has become an issue. It's why I really enjoyed my plastic ball league as it was a refreshing change of pace to know that matching up became a non-factor.

I always TRY to hit a mark.  Like said earlier, sometimes your right on, sometimes not so much.  I think that pretty much everyone has a mark they are trying to hit.  The area aspect is the idea that you can miss that mark in or out and still have success.  The only time I ever throw to an area is when the lanes are toasted.  6 weeks ago, the oil machine broke right before our league.  We were left with the reminants of oil from the previous nights 5 man league and all the open bowlers that day.  At that time I was just trying to get the ball down the lane far enough to have a chance to hit the pocket.
